Hattaras Connection Planning Seafood Fundraiser
seafood hattarasHatteras Connection plans to sponsor an early winter seafood fundraiser to benefit the Hatteras Island Food Pantry and the Hatteras Island Adult Care Home Delivered Meals program.

Island watermen are ready to donate fish for the fundraiser.

But, we need your help in organizing the event. Please attend a planning meeting Thursday, November 5, 2 p.m., at the Fessenden Center in Buxton. Contact susan and rob west [ridgeroad@earthlink.net]

Hatteras Connection is a new community-based development project that is exploring ways Hatteras Island can enhance the economic and cultural benefits commercial fishing and charter-boat fishing bring to the larger, interconnected community, while also helping to ensure a future for new generations of watermen on the island.
Health Care Legislation

CBPP HEALTHAccording to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the comprehensive health reform legislation that House Democratic leaders unveiled on October 29 would make significant progress in three critical areas: expanding health coverage and ensuring that such coverage is affordable, slowing the growth in health care costs, and instituting essential reforms in the health insurance market.
Moreover, the bill's cost is more than fully offset; that is, the legislation would reduce budget deficits by $104 billion over ten years, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The bill's revenues and spending reductions would grow faster than the cost of the coverage provisions, according to CBO, which estimates that the bill would modestly reduce deficits in years after 2019 as well.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is one of the nation's premier policy organizations working at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals.

  • Ruthie's Community Kitchen Opens.
ruth kitchenThis interfaith initiative is named after the late Ruthie Rigor, an active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal and a community volunteer extraordinaire.  St. Andrew's invited many congregations to the table and now free suppers are being offered every Tuesday night, between 5-6:30 pm at His Dream Center by Ruthie's Community Kitchen (locations may vary and will be announced in advance).  Around 45 meals were served or taken to go on this first night.  Information was packed in Food for Thought bags sent home with children over the weekend, flyers are also posted at community food drops and the Beach Food Pantry.

ruth kitchenCongregations are sponsoring each Tuesday night.  If a  congregation is not yet participating, all that is needed so far to staff the night is 6 or so cooks, servers, and cleaners.  The first menu was simply chili, hot dogs, macaroni & cheese, apples, carrots, cookies and brownies which went over very well.  A donation is also requested from the congregation to cover His Dream Center's building expenses.  Drop in volunteers are also welcome to help out.

Gail Leonard (202-8820) and John Phelan (441-3400) may be contacted for more information or to schedule a night to participate.

"Health Reform 2009: Why should we care, what we must do." Mon., Nov. 16, Kill Devil Hills Town Hall, 7:00 p.m.

Come and learn about what reform might deliver, what might still be left to be accomplished, as well as how to influence legislation with informed advocacy. League members from the Piedmont Triad League of Women Voters, Robin Lane and Dr. Teresa Bratton, will present the program followed by Mary Ellen Hawthorne discussing "How a bill becomes law". Robin is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Educator who serves on the LWV-US Health Care Education Task Force; Dr. Bratton is a primary care physician. Both live in Greensboro and have been active in the local League's health reform roundtable, a group which has met for more than two years to plan and deliver voter education programs on health care issues. Participants will gain an understanding of the specific steps available to them to influence the outcome of the reform initiative in Washington.
    Outer Banks Cancer Support Group
cancer supportThe Outer Banks Cancer Support Group was founded in 1989 by the late Alice Kelly.  Alice was an Outer Banks local who found through her cancer journey, the lack of services and help in Dare County.  The group is a non-profit organization and is open to any resident in Dare County, whether they are a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver or just want to be part of a support group.  The group's objective is to provide moral and emotional support and temporary financial assistance to those going through the various stages of cancer.  Transportation subsidy is available to anyone who requests it and additional temporary financial help is available to those who have a true need.

The group meets monthly on the first Tuesday at the Cancer Resource Center of The Outer Banks Hopsital.  Guest speakers are welcomed, bringing new knowledge and help to members and visitors.  The Outer Banks Cancer Support Group relies solely on donations from individuals, civic groups, and local business owners along with two yearly fundraisers, The Alice Kelly Fishing Tournament and The Seascape Golf Tournament.  All funds raised are used to help local Dare County residents.  If you are a cancer survivor, family member or friend of someone who is a cancer survivor, the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group extends a warm welcome to join the other members and share your experience with them.  A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer, and includes a newly diagnosed person, as well as a long-term survivor.  Volunteers are always welcome to help the group with fund-raising and for ongoing support of the cancer community of Dare County.   More information is available from President Jim Goes at 252-261-1149 or Bese Kelly, MSW at 252-449-7350.

"To see the collaboration with the arts, a beautiful area for the children, the wonderful computers - it's just wonderful to see," she said. "Civic engagement is clearly alive and well in this community and the financial support and dedication of your county speaks volumes."  Jaskot said Moyock's new library is one of the finest in the state, and she expects it will be used a lot. "I visit a lot of libraries in my job and this place is just beautiful," . "All across North Carolina we see that the usage of our public libraries is growing tremendously. We also know that when a new library is built of renovated, the usage always increases."  Jaskot said she sees the library as a mainstay for the community and a beacon to attract new families and businesses to the area.
