North Carolina
Over 150 dentists
and hygienists from across the state and in Dare County will provide free dental
services including cleanings, fillings, and extractions to nearly 1000 adult patients
as part of the Missions of Mercy dental program. To orchestrate such this large
scale event, community volunteers are needed to assist with registration,
parking, set up, clean up, and numerous other support functions. Volunteers
are needed for unloading trucks, paperwork, runners, clean-up, patient
escort, directing traffic and more. You can volunteer now online at Interfaith Community Outreach. The Dare County
Department of Public Health (DCDPH) and the Healthy Carolinians of the Outer
Banks (HCOB) are partnering with the North Carolina Dental Society to host a
two day free adult dental clinic on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24 to serve
uninsured and under-insured adults.

October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The pink ribbon has become the symbol of hope for a cure for breast cancer and a reminder that breast cancer does not have to be fatal.
Every woman matters
and in Dare County the Healthy Carolinians Breast
Cancer Taskforce is doing everything it can to encourage women of all ages to
be proactive about their breast health.
Women are encouraged to engage in appropriate prevention and early
detection activities so that they can enjoy healthy and productive lives with
those they love, by talking to their doctors or healthcare providers and knowing
the facts about breast cancer and what they can do to reduce their risk of
developing breast cancer. Women over 40
are encouraged to have annual mammograms and engage in early detection
activities in order to identify cancer early so that effective treatment can
save lives.
The Healthy Carolinians Breast Cancer Taskforce is
sponsoring PINK SUNDAY in
collaboration with area restaurants and food establishments. This event will be occurring on Sunday October
25th with many area restaurants throughout Dare County offering
something special for patrons that wear pink as a show of support for and
awareness of, prevention and early detection activities. Restaurants that are closed on Sunday may be
hosting an awareness event on Saturday. We encourage our community to eat out
on Sunday October 25th in support of breast cancer awareness, prevention
and early detection. Check with your favorite restaurant to find out their
schedule and what they are offering in support of PINK SUNDAY.

The Really Really Free Market
Avon Fire Station on
the first Saturday of the month from 9:30am-12:30pm throughout the
winter. For the November 7th event, the focus will be on Fall/Winter
clothing items. Since it is the time of year when we are all pulling
our items out of storage, it's the perfect time to pass on things we
can no longer use. Children and adults alike can bring items to donate
to the community and browse through what others have brought to share.
For December, the focus will be on holiday items such as decorations
and gently used toys, books, or other "giftable" things. Contributions
are not limited, however, and all donations are welcome. Nothing is
required for participation, but please think creatively about the
skills you have and could teach, the useful or beautiful things you
have and don't need, or the resources you can share with people to
create something during the event. Arrangements can be made for
leftover items to be donated to the area thrift stores. For more
information contact 995-3855. The
purpose of the Kinnakeet Civic Association is to sponsor, promote, conduct, manage and carry on
activities and programs for the improvement of and benefit of the
social and civic welfare of the citizens of Kinnakeet, Dare County. Join them on Facebook.

Movie Making at Jockey's Ridge.
With a production date set for fall '09, Sol
tells the harrowing tale of five young adults that find themselves
stranded further from home than they ever thought possible. Everything
goes wrong for the children as the comforts of home grow increasingly
distant and the technologies they rely so heavily upon fail just as
painfully as their hopes of ever getting back.
You can read more in the Sol Development Blog. The production is local to North Carolina.

HATTERAS CONNECTION
Hatteras Connection is a new project dedicated to the vision of a vigorous, diversified Outer Banks economy that is strengthened by marine resource businesses. The project is bringing together individuals and organizations that share a belief in a fundamental principle - that Outer Banks communities are stronger because of the presence of the hard-working watermen who live here and that actions taken now can ensure that fishing is a viable career choice for future generations. Hatteras Connection is a community project in the truest sense. Particpation is open to everyone who believes that healthy, marine resource-based economies result in economic, cultural, social and environmental benefits for the entire Hatteras Island community. The project has set ambitious but achievable goals - strengthening the voice of the community in support of a sustainable fishing future, engaging watermen and the scientific community in collaboratively developing a strong science platform, helping develop a branding and marketing pro-gram for Dare County seafood, and increasing the positive public image of Hatteras Island watermen as an integral part of the community. We hope you will join us in making Hatteras Island a leader in fishing com-munity development. Our island has the "right stuff" - the skills, the knowledge, the talent, the innovative spirit - to secure a sustainable future.
