New Girl Scout Center Brings Community Together On
September 23, the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast officially opened the
Girl Scout Manteo Field Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The center,
located in the old county administration building at 211 Budleigh Street in Manteo, was
generously provided to the Girl Scouts by Dare County.
Dare
County Board
of Commissioners Chairman Warren Judge spoke at proceedings, along with Board
Commissioner Virginia Tillett, Charles Hardy from the Outer Banks Community
Foundation which funds Girl Scout after-school programs at four Dare County
elementary schools, and John Bone, from the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.
"The
County is pleased to know the Girl Scouts will have a place they can call their
own," Warren
said. "This is a historic building and has served the county well. I'm glad to know it will continue to serve
our community by providing a meeting space for Girl Scouts, a place for
volunteers to be trained and a gathering place for fellowship."
At
the conclusion of the celebration, Alva Lamonte, co-chair for the Beach Ford
Pantry, accepted a donation of ten cases of Girl Scout cookies from Girl Scout
Council of Colonial Coast Membership Specialist Marsha Riibner-Cady. Mt.
Olivett Food Pantry will receive 10 cases of cookies as well.
"This
is just the first of many donations to come," Marsha said. "We will be bringing
in a lot more during our upcoming October 24 Girl Scout Helping Hands Food Drive."
When
asked if she was ever a Girl Scout, Board Commissioner Tillett replied,
"Although I was never a Girl Scout, I've always supported
the girls through the annual cookie sale. When they come to my door in pairs, I buy a box from both! But I support
them in other ways whenever I can as well. I know it is more
than cookies. It is a program helping girls grow in courage and character. We
need more girls to become Girl
Scouts."

Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition Film Series
October 20, 7:00 pm, Holy
Redeemer Church, Kitty
Hawk
Money-Driven
Medicine provides a comprehensive analysis of the healthcare industry. It explains why the drive to maximize profits
infects the quality, integrity and efficiency of healthcare at every level. And
looks at how has money-driven medicine come between doctors and their patients?
What are the advantages - and challenges - of moving to a care model based on
informed, shared decision-making which puts the patient's needs first? a new
paradigm - patient-centered care, what everyone agrees medicine should be all
about but rarely is. The film shows how a collaboration based on listening to,
informing and involving patients and their families in medical decisions and
treatments can improve health outcomes.
After showing of the film, there will be a reflection of
peace, followed with an opportunity for people to share their stories - or the
stories about people they care about - that reflect the challenges and issues
raised in the film.
