In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as
"Mental Illness Awareness Week" (MIAW) in recognition of NAMI's efforts
to raise mental illness awareness. Since 1990, mental health advocates
across the country have joined together during the first week of
October to celebrate. PBS WUNC will broadcast Minds on the Edge: Facing Mental Illness. on Tuesday,Oct. 6 at 10:00 PM Help spread the word! NAMI hopes to use this
provocative, informative program to support advocacy for reform of the
mental heath care system. On PBS, online and in the community, MINDS ON THE EDGE is starting the conversation about mental illness and requesting we Join them in encouraging dialogue from kitchen tables to town halls, from
coffee shops to professional meetings, and from nonprofit organizations
to state houses.
Answers to the challenging questions of how to provide treatment and
support for people living with mental illness can only emerge from
robust conversation within family and circle of friends, and within our community.Be a part of it, and a voice for progress "If we can talk about mental illness, so can you."
That statement sums up the simple idea of the project's outreach
campaign. It is time to confront the stigma that silences so many
people struggling with the consequences of mental illness, talk
publicly about the challenges that face us as individuals, as families
and as a society, and build a mental health system that meets our needs
on all of these levels. |
Right-wing extremists want everyone to think that rural Americans
are irrational and dramatically opposed to health care reform. But I'm not buying it. The silent majority of rural Americans want and need health care reform that is inclusive, affordable and includes a public option.
Rural Americans are more likely to be uninsured or underinsured and
have fewer choices of private insurance and health care providers while
having more health care needs. While all Americans stand to gain from
health care reform, arguably rural Americans have the most to gain. In the
summer of 2009, a team of filmmakers traveled to state and county fairs
around the United States to see first-hand how the health care crisis
is affecting real families. These are stories of hard-working families struggling to get by. They remind me of people I know and love in North Carolina, Maryland, Texas, Idaho. . . People who have worked hard all their lives. They have served their country. They have raised kids, worked long hours, and been good neighbors. They deserve affordable and quality health care. Don't let fear and greed win. We can do better. Nancy |
