Additional Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinics.
the Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH) will conduct two additional flu vaccination clinics for the seasonal flu on Tuesday, September 29 and Wednesday, September 30. Flu vaccinations will be available for adults by appointment at the following:

Dare County Department of Public Health - Manteo
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Baum Senior Center - Kill Devil Hills
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
9:00 - 12.00 and 1:00 - 4:00

These clinics are not for administering the pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) vaccine, formerly referred to as Swine Flu. That vaccine will be available at a later date.
Seasonal influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that generally circulates annually from October to March. In general, anyone who wants to reduce the chance of getting the flu can get vaccinated.
Individuals wishing to make an appointment for either clinic location should call DCDPH at 475-5003 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, September 25 or Monday, September 28.  The cost of the flu vaccine is $35 which can be paid by cash, check, Medicare, Medicaid or Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
For more information about the flu or flu vaccination, contact DCDPH at 475-5003 or visit www.darenc.com or www.flu.nc.gov.

CROP Hunger Walk in Dare County
crop walkOrganized locally, the Dare County CROP Hunger Walk has set a goal of 300 Walkers and hopes to raise $20,000 to help stop hunger and poverty here in our community and around the world, through self-help initiatives.  A portion of the funds raised here in Dare County will go to the hunger-fighting work of Food for Thought, Interfaith Community Outreach, The Beach Food Pantry, and The Mount Olivet UMC Food Pantry.

Last year, 280 walkers raised more than $17,000 in the CROP Hunger Walk.

Hattaras Connection: Collaborative Solutions for a Vibrant Community.
Hattars 1Hatteras Connection is a new project dedicated to the vision of a vigorous, diversified Outer Banks economy that is strengthened by marine resource businesses.  The project is bringing together individuals and organizations that share a belief in a fundamental principle - that Outer Banks communities are stronger because of the presence of the hard-working watermen who live here and that actions taken now can ensure that fishing is a viable career choice for future generations.

The project has set ambitious but achievable goals - strengthening the voice of the community in support of a sustainable fishing future, engaging watermen and the scientific community in collaboratively developing a strong science platform, helping develop a branding and marketing program for Dare County seafood, and increasing the positive public image of Hatteras Island watermen as an integral part of the community.

The time is ripe for this undertaking.  There is renewed recognition of the value of strong, local economies, and growing interest in cultural tourism.  And, consumer interest in local, sustainably- harvested seafood is skyrocketing.  Consider joining in in making Hatteras Island a leader in fishing community development.  Our island has the "right stuff" - the skills, the knowledge, the talent, the innovative spirit - to secure a sustainable future.

New Policies Help Make Adoptions More Affordable.
muttThe Animal Lovers Assistance League has just implemented two new policies at the Currituck Animal Shelter  which will help make adopting a new pet even easier.  The new "Sponsor a Pet Adoption" policy  allows for a person who would like to help a special animal get adopted but he has no space, or the person has other limitations that prevent him from being able to adopt the animal himself, but  he wants to help someone else adopt that animal.  The sponsor donates the cost of the adoption fee, which is $45.00 for a kitten; $85. for a cat; $75.00 for a puppy who is too young to yet receive his rabies vaccination; and $87.00 for a dog, which includes his rabies vaccination and other vaccinations.  Our first recipient of such a sponsorship is our beautiful snow white cat Casper.  Through our "Pets for Seniors" Senior citizens are also eligible to receive a Senior Discount of $25.00 off of the adoption of any shelter animal.

Another new policy, "Free at Six "  waives the adoption fee completely for an animal who has been at the shelter for at least six months, provided that the perspective owner meets the criteria set forth in the Adoption Contract.   The adoption of some breeds requires a satisfactory home visit and an owner background check before they can be adopted.

Please contact the Currituck Animal Shelter at (252) 457-0011 to find out about how you may go about participating in these new ways of helping animals find a new loving home.
SICKO being shown on Friday, September 25.
The words "health care" and "comedy" aren't usually found in the same sentence, but in Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore's new movie 'SiCKO,' they go together hand in (rubber) glove.  While Moore's 'SiCKO' follows the trailblazing path of previous hit films, the Oscar-winning BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and all-time box-office documentary champ FAHRENHEIT 9/11, it is also something very different for Michael Moore. 'SiCKO' is a straight-from-the-heart portrait of the crazy and sometimes cruel U.S. health care system, told from the vantage of everyday people faced with extraordinary and bizarre challenges in their quest for basic health coverage.

In the tradition of Mark Twain or Will Rogers, 'SiCKO' uses humor to tell these compelling stories, leading the audience to conclude that an alternative system is the only possible answer. The public is invited to a free showing at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks at 7:00, September 25.  intersection of Kitty Hawk and Herbert Perry Roads. Bring Your Own Snacks & Beverages.  After each film, will be a discussion session for any who wish to participate or just listen.
    Walk for Hunger
Walk for HungerOn October 11, 2009, rain or shine, the Food Bank of the Albemarle will hold its annual Walk for Hunger.  Registration will start at 12:30 PM.  Walkers will leave at 2:00 PM from Charles Creek Park in Elizabeth City and cover about 4.1 miles.  The walk is the major fund raiser for the Food Bank, and we rely on the traditionally superb support and enthusiasm from our local communities, churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals to help provide the funds we need to serve the hungry in northeast North Carolina.

Once again, there will be games for the children, camaraderie, and a great lunch hosted and provided by Montero's.

Please consider taking part as a walker, a team organizer, or a sponsor.  Your efforts will go a long way and make a great impact.  For each dollar that is raised by our walkers and their sponsors, we are able to provide about five pounds of food.  That is the equivalent of over four meals.  Please circle October 11, 2009 on your calendar and dust off the walking shoes.  For more information call Cee Cee at 252-335-4035 extension 100 or John at extension 111.  Additionally, you can download walk materials at our website, www.afoodbank.org.  Please follow the walk logo to the Walk for Hunger 2009 page.
    mOM Dentistry

    NCMOM
The Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH) and the Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks (HCOB) are partnering with the North Carolina Dental Society to host a two day free adult dental clinic on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24 to serve uninsured and under-insured adults.

Oral health problems not only cause serious pain but also pose a significant health risks.  Given the challenge for adults to obtain dental care, particularly for uninsured and under-insured, this clinic presents a great opportunity to provide dental care to those in need and improve their overall health", comments Anne Thomas, DCDPH Director.  The size of this project requires the coordination and support of many nonprofit and government organizations.  Below leaders work on logistics and volunteers.

ncmom DiscussionThe clinic will be held in Kill Devil Hills at the Dare County Parks and Recreation Youth and Family Recreation Park at 602 South Mustian Street. Patient registration will begin at 6:00 am on both days and will continue until the maximum numbers of patients able to be seen are registered.
