Despite Respite Care
Dare Respite Care is a program designed to support family caregivers providing care for frail, elderly, shut-in individuals or special needs and/or disabled children, offering a brief "break" or respite from their care giving role. Trained volunteers stay with the family member for short intervals so that caregivers can get out of the house to engage in restorative activities in order to return to their care giving role refreshed and renewed.
Dare Respite Care is a faith-based initiative working with area churches, faith organizations and civic or community groups to recruit volunteers and identify individuals and families in need of respite support services. All volunteers receive specialized training, complete a background check and receive direct oversight provided by the Program Coordinator, Stephanie Bowers. Services are made available without charge.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, a partnering church or civic/community organization, or are in need of respite support, or would like more information about Dare Respite Care, please call Stephanie Bowers, Program Coordinator at (252) 475-5028. Dare Respite Care is administered by the Home Health and Hospice Division of the Dare County Department of Public Health. Many organizations have membership levels based on financial contribution. CROP Hunger Walk in Dare County
Organized locally, the Dare County CROP Hunger Walk has set a goal of 300 Walkers and hopes to raise $20,000 to help stop hunger and poverty here in our community and around the world, through self-help initiatives. A portion of the funds raised here in Dare County will go to the hunger-fighting work of Food for Thought, Interfaith Community Outreach, The Beach Food Pantry, and The Mount Olivet UMC Food Pantry. Last year, 280 walkers raised more than $17,000 in the CROP Hunger Walk. "CROP" means "Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty". This year Dare County and some 2,000 cities and towns nationwide are joining together in interfaith community CROP Hunger Walks around the theme "We walk because they walk." Many of the CROP Walkers will be wearing "We walk because they walk" T-shirts, proclaiming their solidarity with the millions of neighbors around the world who have to walk to live -- as well as with the millions served by local food pantries, food banks, and meal sites here in the U.S. These local ministries share in the funds raised by CROP Hunger Walks. How can you get involved? Be a sponsor: sponsor someone to walk.
Advertise: businesses can advertise on t-shirts as sponsors of the event or just by hanging posters in windows.
Start up a team: Contact Arlene Perry for resources on starting up a team in your organization to raise money (you can even walk "online").
Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 18 to be at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Registration for the walk starts at 2pm with music and activities for everyone. The walk starts at 3pm. For more information about the Dare County CROP Hunger Walk or how to get involved, contact Coordinator, Kevin Brunk at (252) 473-6837 or Treasurer, Arlene Perry at (252) 480-2375.
