Volunteer Opportunities

iconAlbemarle Commission needs volunteers to deliver nutritious meals to senior citizens Monday through Friday.  If you can donate an hour, please contact Della Perry at 252-475-6543 or Sandra Cantrell Bush at 252-473-5768 ext. 28

iconThe Dare Literacy Council (DLC) is in need of volunteer tutors. Tutors are trained to teach adults to learn to read, to improve their reading or math skills, to learn English as a Second Language or to prepare for their GED (high school equivalency).  Contact the DLC to register for both the orientation and training at (252) 216-7773 or dareliteracy@gmail.com.

iconOuter Banks Learning Center in Kill Devil Hills coordinates a program called Rebound that provides academic support, career counseling and service projects to Dare County students out of school due to a suspension as an alternative to students staying home.  Schools in the district refer students to us and we set up tutoring and career and behavioral counseling and assign them to a community organization where they volunteer during the time they are out of school.  We use local organizations as volunteer sites with the goal of providing students with a positive, non-academic way to contribute and build community relationships.   We are looking for additional service sites for the Rebound program--local organizations and businesses--that could use help from local students on an on-going basis during the day. If interested, contact Shelly Summerton Gregg at Outer Banks Learning Center 449-OBLC(6252)or info@learnobx.com

At Holy Redeemer, September 15), Silent Killer

While hunger may not be an immediate issue in your life, or the lives of your family or your friends, its existence in the world does in fact have very real ramifications for each of us.
Solving chronic hunger creates peace and stability in the world. Long term desperation and scarcity can drive people to extremes and result in political instability, violence, terrorism and war. Ending hunger and poverty in poor countries creates new markets for our products, and provides more employment opportunities in western countries.
Acceptance of world hunger is counter to American values. The United States was founded on the principles of equality and liberty. For many Americans concern for the poor is a matter of responsibility and strong religious tenet.
Finally, we should care about ending world hunger because the solutions are known and available. We have the knowledge, the science and the technology to do it. Hunger could end in our life time. How can we not act to alleviate this unnecessary human suffering?!
