The National Council of Churchesthrough its Committee on Families and Children, and the
Health Task Force, senses that our nation's cry for dependable, affordable
health care for all people is growing in volume and strength. Like the
prophet Habakkuk, we believe we hear God's injunction to "write the vision
plain..." In response, we are committed to work for a straightforward
approach that honors all persons and is sustainable by both individuals and
society. You can read a background paper on healthcare reform can be found and Pastoral Letter on Healthcare and Call to ActionThe NCC's member faith groups - from a wide spectrum of
Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox, Evangelical, historic African American and Living Peace
churches - include 45 million persons in more than 100,000 local
congregations in communities across the nation.
Other faiths are calling for action as well: Union of Reform Judaism, Jewish Reconstruction Federation, Unitarian Universalism Association, and Catholic Charities.

Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition Film Series
The Council is sponsoring a monthly series of highly-acclaimed documentaries on social and justice issues. Films are shown on the third Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Holy Redeemer. The first film this series (September 15) will be Silent Killer, a powerful, exquisitely photographed documentary that will get people talking
again about an international crisis that keeps haunting the world. When will we end hunger or will it
always be with us?Why
should we try? What will it take? What are we doing now? How do U.S. efforts to
end hunger compare with those of other developed countries? Can biotechnology
play a role, and if so, how? Is hunger just a problem of distribution or do we
still need to produce more and better crops? These are the questions addressed
in the documentary SILENT KILLER.

Currituck League of Women Voters Toast 19th Amendment Anniversary
Eighty-nine years after women first gained the right to vote in this country,
Currituck women continue to be trailblazers.
Not only have Currituck women obtained political offices once reserved for men
- county commissioner, school board and clerk of Superior Court - the county
is also home to one of the handful of female sheriffs in North Carolina.
"I think everyone in this room is a leader," Currituck League of Women Voters
president Nancy Proctor said, speaking to a room of about a dozen Currituck
women Thursday. "I thank all of you for the leadership you provide to the
county and the role model you provide for our daughters."
The occasion was the League of Women Voters' celebration of the 89th
anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution, and the attendees included Currituck Sheriff Susan Johnson,
Board of Education members Sharon Martz and Pat Stretar and Clerk of
Superior Court Shelia Tyler.
