Support Surfrider Foundation
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit
grassroots organization
dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans,
waves and beaches.
With less than two months left to beat the Sept. 21
cut-off date for submitting public comments on offshore drilling to the Department of Interior, the local Surfrider Chapter is continuing their petition drive. To make it easier for residents, tourists and especially businesses
to go sign petitions, they have set up the following 'outposts' in various towns:
Lisa's Pizzeria (Rodanthe); Hatteras Island Boardsports (Avon); Natural Art
Surf Shop (Buxton); Frisco Sandwich Co. (Frisco); Corolla Surf Shop and Whalebone (Nags Head) and WRV (Kitty Hawk.)
The local chapter is sponsoring the movie 'BlueGreen' at the Pit on
Sept. 1. Filmmaker Ben Keller will be there, and they will have petitions ready - as well as $1 tacos and Surfboard Raffle. BlueGreen isn't about the gnarliest waves
or the latest boat trip to Indo. It's a film that explores the
connection between human beings and the ocean through stories from
various ambassadors of surfing. In Ben's own words: Blue green is a surf film, yes. But it is more than that. It is an exploration of our ties to the ocean - beyond the obvious. |
Heroes in the Fight
The Heroes in the Fight program was established and sponsored by Eli
Lilly and Company to celebrate dignity, courage, hope, and recovery in
the ongoing treatment of persons with severe and persistent mental
illness (SPMI) by recognizing "heroes" who provide care and support for
these individuals and their families. The program recognizes and
celebrates the heroic work of many people who fight for better mental
health and better lives on a daily basis in their community. Persons
who best exemplify ongoing care and dedication in this field are
nominated by their peers within the local mental health community. Nominations
being accepted until August 27, 2009! The fight
against mental illness is waged in countless ways by countless heroes. From the
mother fighting to reclaim her son, to the social worker looking for clients
lost to the streets, to the policeman who knows when someone needs medical
help, not prison time- these are the souls who make a difference. By
making one life better. One family stronger. One burden
lighter. Do
you know a hero like this, someone who is unrelenting in the fight? The Mental Health Association of North Carolina is taking nominations to recognize commitment to the fight against severe mental illness. Nominate a Hero Today. |
Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition Film Series
The Council is sponsoring a monthly series of highly-acclaimed documentaries on social and justice issues. Films are shown on the third Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Holy Redeemer. The first film this series (September 15) will be Silent Killer, a powerful, exquisitely photographed documentary that will get people talking
again about an international crisis that keeps haunting the world. When will we end hunger or will it
always be with us?Why
should we try? What will it take? What are we doing now? How do U.S. efforts to
end hunger compare with those of other developed countries? Can biotechnology
play a role, and if so, how? Is hunger just a problem of distribution or do we
still need to produce more and better crops? These are the questions addressed
in the documentary SILENT KILLER.
