Tootsie Rolls raise money for mentally disabled.
tootsie roll Last year local Knights of Columbus raised over $20,000 while collecting funds and giving away Tootsie Rolls outside major food markets.   Teachers in Currituck and Dare County provided with grants ranging from a few hundred to a thousand dollars to benefit local mentally disabled people in our area. So when you see that person with the yellow apron, drop off some change and have a Tootsie Roll.
Embarq recognizes Animal Lovers Assistance League.

animalshelter2Embarq Com-
munications once again recently recognized the outstanding work that is being done by the Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc., in the operation of the Currituck Animal Shelter.  Embarq's Eddie Lynch, Regional Manager, for the fourth consecutive year presented a Business Platinum donation of $500.00  to further the efforts at the Shelter to help animals.  A portion of the donation will be used to purchase an additional large outside pen for the dogs, and the other portion will be placed into the New Animal Adoption Center Building Fund.

" The generous corporate leadership and support  that Embarq provides enhances the community that they serve", according to Animal Lovers Assistance League president Ginger Sikes.  "We are most grateful for their continuing help and support," she says.
American Dream Auction
Homes4NC was created by the North Carolina Association of REALTORS to help more North Carolinians get into homes. They  do this by raising funds and partnering with local REALTOR associations to provide matching grants to nonprofit organizations that help low-income families with their housing needs. Since its inception in 2004, Homes4NC has made grants totaling more than $195,000 to 51 housing organizations across the state.  Since local REALTOR associations provide matching funds, NC REALTORS  had a direct impact of nearly $400,000 in five years.

Albemarle Commission THIS SUMMER
Volunteers need to deliver hot, nutritious meals to senior citizens.  Contact Della Perry at (252-441-1181) or Sandra Cantrell Bush at (252-473-5768 ext. 28)  The beach area seems to always have a need for volunteers in the summer because so many of regular volunteers are working while they have an opportunity.

The Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast, a United Way agency, serves over 16,000 girls in grades K through 12, and 6,000 adult volunteers in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. In Girl Scouting, caring adult volunteers help build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
VIP Fishing Tournament Needs Volunteers
Sponsored by the First Flight, Nags Head, Manteo, Wanchese, Columbia, Currituck, Lower Currituck and Plymouth Lions clubs, the North Carolina Lions VIP Fishing Tournament attracts over 500 blind and visually impaired people, along with their guests, ages 12 to 91 to the Outer Banks. The tournament which will be held October 11, 12, 13 and 14, this year, draws people from 77 counties and is the largest gathering of blind and visually impaired people in North Carolina.
Adopt a fisherman
Volunteers make the tournament a success each year by working to prepare each site for our participants. They prepare the rods and reels for the fishing tournament, along with cutting bait, hauling fish to be weighed and serving as guides for the visually impaired participants. They welcome the participants at the local motels, stuff registration packets, transport supplies and prepare and sale merchandise during the event; they set up 150 tables and 750 chairs at the local gymnasium where meals and seminars will be held; they help prepare food and serve the participants breakfast, lunch and dinner; they clean up the gymnasium after each meal and prepare for the next meal; and they actually pay for the privilege of being a volunteer.  If you are interested you can find an application on line.  If you would like to 'adopt a fisherman', contact Angelo Sonnesso.
