Albemarle Commission THIS SUMMER
Volunteers need to deliver hot, nutritious meals to senior citizens.  Contact Della Perry at (252-441-1181) or Sandra Cantrell Bush at (252-473-5768 ext. 28)  The beach area seems to always have a need for volunteers in the summer because so many of regular volunteers are working while they have an opportunity.

NC Racial Justice Act.

The NC Senate is voting today on the NC Racial Justice . Please call Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight and Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand and say, "I am calling to ask the Senator to support the Racial Justice Act." It will just take a moment.

Sen. Marc Basnight:  (919) 733-6854
Sen. Tony Rand:  (919) 733-9892

It is vital that the Senate pass the RJA with the inclusion of the use of statewide statistics. In the US Supreme Court decision on the death penalty McClesky v. Kemp, Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell invited legislatures to craft appropriate rules to ensure the death penalty is not exercised in biased ways. The House version of the RJA is a fair and balanced attempt to provide the courts with the tools to examine this issue in an impartial manner.

House Bill 472 and Senate Bill 461, known as The North Carolina Racial Justice Act, addresses racial discrimination in capital sentencing. A video on Youtube features
death row exonoree Edward Chapman, talks about racial bias and how the Racial Justice Act attempts to assure that race would not play a role in who gets the death penalty.
