Dare Education Foundation and AVID.
The mission of the Dare Education Foundation is to promote excellence in education in Dare County Schools through active partnership with the community. DEF is funded by private donations large and small,
grants, sponsorships, and special events. Funds are used to advance
teacher training, create access to new educational opportunities for
students, and provide support for innovative programs in our schools. The Foundation is helping put the AVID Program (Advancement
Via Individual Determination) in place in Dare County Schools. The first group of AVID students began as 7th graders at MMS and
will graduate from Manteo High School in 2011. AVID is now in place in
every secondary school in Dare County.
AVID
targets students in the academic middle - B, C, and even D students -
who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.
Typically, they are the first in their families to attend college, and
many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these
students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the
college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
 Nationally,
95% of AVID graduates go on to college and 75% earn a four year
degree. What's more,AVID is proven to raise the bar of academic
excellence and achievement for all students in schools where it is
implemented. You can donate to help the AVID Program or the Foundation other programs online.

Fight Against Childhood Hunger
Sponsored by: Feeding America (formerly known as Second Harvest)
Approximately 13 million American children are at risk of hunger every day.
These undernourished children are in great danger of social, physical,
and educational problems, especially during the summer months, when
school lunch programs are no longer an option. At Feeding America, we
want to do more to ensure all children receive the nutrition they need. All you have to do is sign a petition asking Congress to make sure all our nation's children get three nutritious meals every day.
