Facing Deportation
This site is a professional thesis project completed by Eileen Mignoni in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
DeportationFor each person detained in immigration actions, an estimated additional 3.5 people are directly affected. Those affected are mothers, fathers, children and spouses. How are they affected? An estimated 35,000 people were placed in detention proceedings during 2008, many of them through the efforts of local law-enforcement agencies that partner with the Department of Homeland Security to detain and remove illegal aliens. That means immigration proceedings disrupted an estimated 122,500 lives in the U.S last year.

CommonGround
We share the air, the earth, and the water with each other.  CommonGood hopes to  provide resources, information and dialogue about environmental Issues on the Outer Banks.   One Section is reserved for Climate Change Critics. One of the pleasures of the internet is the ability to link back what's behind generalizations by researching sponsors and 'scientists. With the summer heat beginning to bear down here - climate change sounds like an appropriate summer project.

Little more than two years ago, I started with 100 subscribers.  I wrote in the first issue:

Aristotle said "Where your talents and the need of the world cross, there lies your vocation."

I believe the world needs more justice, more peace, better access to healthcare, more diversity and more compassion.  My world now is Lower Currituck and Date County. After years of professional human resource work and marketing communication and retirement days of exploring software and the Internet,  I feel called to offer a service to my world. I find I have to read three different newspapers to find out about the good work and good causes in our community. As a relative newcomer, I don't often understand the network of social justice, social action and community outreach programs.

So I propose a new connection: the CommonGood E-News.  This is a nonpartisan, nonprofit newsletter providing communication of events and activities sponsored by grassroots efforts and nonprofits in social justice, and community outreach.

Thank you to all supporters and contributors. It has been a great two years. I've met many, many good people who reach out with compassion and work for justice.  Frederick Buechner once said:
As we move around this world and as we act with kindness towards the people we meet, we are setting the great spider web atremble.  The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.

I've lived in big cities.  The work was good and rewarding. But it was hard feel you could make the great and complex spider web tremor.  The web is smaller here. Here, each person has the blessed opportunity to make a difference, to set the web trembling.  May our future bring us together, dancing with joy and peace across the web of our interconnected lives.

Peace, Justice, and Joy
