Don't Miss this.  Breathing Earth., a real-time simulation that displays the CO2 emissions of every country in the world, as well as their birth and death rates.

Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Please note however that the CO2 emission levels shown here are much more likely to be too low than they are to be too high.

Annual Continuing the Journey
Dare Home Health and Hospice, an agency of the Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH), will host the Second Annual Continuing the Journey on Sunday, May 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden.  The Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden is located next to the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills. arboretum

The purpose of this event is to provide helpful tools to those involved in the grieving process and to those currently suffering from the loss of a loved one,'' comments Anne Thomas, Dare County Health Director.  Visitors will have the opportunity to walk through the arboretum and visit areas set up with various activities that are designed to help people move forward in the grieving process. Memory flags, poetry, music and a labyrinth are a few of the tools that will be available at the event.

WeavingInger Seitz, President of the Outer Banks Fiber Guild, watches as Ellie Ward, Director of Nursing for Dare Home Health and Hospice weaves a ribbon into the Memory Cloth made at last year's Continuing the Journey event. The Memory Cloth is currently on display at the Baum Center.

``Loss is a part of the cycles of life and comes in many forms,'' explains Ellie Ward, Nursing Director for Dare Home Health and Hospice. ``This event is meant to provide a place and a way to express and share grief to cope with a loss in our lives, loss of a loved one to death or disease, loss of a job, loss of a relationship and more.''

Henrietta MacIntyre attended last year's program after the loss of her husband. After attending, she wrote to the staff and volunteers who organized the event commenting on how much the experience meant to her and helped her along her journey.
``This program filled me with a heartwarming experience that moved me forward to a higher and broader level in my `growing with grief','' she wrote.

This event is supported by Gallop Funeral Services, Inc., the Outer Banks Fiber Guild and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension of Dare County.  For more information call Fran Veihmeyer, with Dare Home Health and Hospice, at 475-5056.
David Stick dies at 89

By Patrick Wilson
The Virginian-Pilot
 May 25, 2009
David StickDavid Stick, an author and pioneer in recording the history of coastal North Carolina, has died at the age of 89.
Stick, who lived in Kitty Hawk and was the first mayor of the town of Southern Shores, died Sunday, according to his son. Stick also was the first licensed real estate broker in Dare County and a co-founder in 1982 of the Outer Banks Community Foundation, a nonprofit that grants money to worthy causes.
His massive collection of northeastern North Carolina maps, charts, books and papers is at the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo.
"As far as the history of the coast of North Carolina, he was really a pioneer," said Kevin Duffus, a historian from Raleigh who knew Stick since the late 1970s. "He preserved the history of the Outer Banks and the Tidewater area of North Carolina long before anyone ever thought that that was an important thing to preserve or to study."
