Grownups and Facebook
hebron
I don't know why I first started using Facebook.  Maybe it was my daughter-in-law who invited me to view some photos from their vacation.  So I signed up.  Along with the other 25 million new users last month.  According to Istrategy Labs, Between June 2008 and January, the number of Facebook members age 35-54 nearly quadrupled - and members older than 55 tripled.

It is fun.  I've found long-lost friends from years ago.  Messages are short and brief. More mundane or witty, than thoughtful. I get a quick insight into the lives of nieces and nephews, all of whom are 2500 miles away.   It is super easy to post photos and secure who can see them.  It is also easy to become a member of a group around some hobby, organization, family, or cause.

There are hundreds of 'grown-up' people from the Outer Banks and Currituck on Facebook, ranging from surfers to teachers to stay-at-home moms.   There are over 5000 fans of the Outer Banks.

If you decide to join,  I'll be your friend. (if I know you).

According to Second Harvest Food Bank:
North Carolina is a "State of Hunger". There are currently six Food Banks in North Carolina that are Feeding America members. These food banks help to serve all 100 counties in North Carolina. In North Carolina:

Pantries, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens serving
1,098,200 annually.

70% of households served have incomes below the federal
poverty level.

49% report having to choose between paying for food or
paying for utilities or heating fuel.

41% report having to choose between paying for food or
paying for rent or mortgage.

38% report choosing between paying for food or paying
for medicine or medical care.

36% of households report having at least one household
member in poor health.

29% of the members of households served are children -
over 300,000 children assisted annually.

12% of the people served are elderly.

10% of the people served are homeless.

Our Food Banks are part of Second Harvest, now called Feeding America. Feeding America is the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity.  Their mission is to feed America's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.

Feeding America has a great interactive map of the United States showing how poverty and hunger affect each area. And the take the 'What do you know about Hunger Quiz?'  I scored 90%.
