Welcome the Immigrant

The N.C. Religious Coalition for Justice for Immigrants was formed in response to rising anti-immigrant rhetoric and sentiment here in North Carolina.

coalition
This coalition has one purpose: to remind people of faith that all people are created in the image of God. In our various faith traditions, it is unacceptable to use -- or let others use -- dehumanizing language in describing fellow human beings. This coalition acknowledges that finding a solution to immigration policy is a complex matter and that people can and do disagree about policy specifics.
But our longstanding faith traditions compel us to recognize the full dignity and humanity in all people.

The legislative session is heating up, with numerous anti-immigrant bills coming out over the last few weeks. You can review the list at their website.

Across the state, over 1,100 people from more than 20 denominations and religious traditions have taken a public stand in favor of hospitality over hostility.

Friends,

My graduate studies were in human resources, communications  and theology.  Not one economics course. So my understanding of the current economic crises is quite limited.  Talking heads just don't do it.  I need larger sound bites with lots of graphics.  Then I discovered NPR's Planet Money.  A blog with explanations, short videos and illustrations.  For example visit this great short on terminology used in understanding the credit crises. If you like this one, look for others on the blog under the category Fun with Economics.

mommy and me 1
Outer Banks Mommy & Me, Inc. ("Mommy & Me") celebrated its five year anniversary on November 5, 2006. Mommy & Me was founded by Thea Crane O'Neil and Cheri Peele. The group began with 10 members with the support of Children Youth Partnership for Dare County and Dare County Youth Center grew to 100 members in just one year.
Outer Banks Mommy & Me is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of young children birth through the age of 5. Playgroups are an integral part of the organization, offering an opportunity for children to play and socialize and for caregivers to interact.

In order to establish a strong network to support children, the group organizes activities for parents, including: dinner and movie nights, book club, board game nights, attendance at lectures on child rearing and child development issues presented by professional medical staff, pot luck dinners, weekend retreats, an annual Valentine's Day ball, local area art performances and guided kayak tours.

Members assist one another through Meals for Moms, a program where members volunteer to provide meals to any family who has recently welcomed a new child or whose caregiver may be ill.

Since its founding, Mommy & Me has been dedicated to giving back to the community. Participation has been strong in events such as: American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, March of Dimes Walk America and Hotline's Festival of Trees. Members have come together to donate clothes and baby items to families in need through Children and Youth Partnership for Dare County, Child Services and other community organizations and to families in Hatteras after Hurricane Isabel. Recently, the organization donated diaper changing stations to the Dare County Youth Center and Westcott Park. The group also adopted a beach access as part of the local Adopt-A-Beach program.

Outer Banks Mommy & Me, Inc. is a member-run organization with approximately 125 current members. For more information and activities, call 305-0787 or email obmommyandme@yahoo.com.
