Groundhog Shadow Day in Currituck
Job shadowing enables young people to shadow a business or community volunteer as he or she goes through part of a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at how skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace. Job shadowing is a win-win proposition for our community because it benefits students, schools, and businesses. Friday, February 20, 2009, is the first Groundhog Job Shadow Day in Currituck County.
This is a day that will be dedicated to giving young people the opportunity to explore a career in a field of their choosing by observing and talking with someone with firsthand experience.
Ther goal is to place fifty Currituck County Schools' Freshmen students in businesses throughout Currituck County. professional community. If you are interested, please contact Shannon Kinser at the Chamber at 453-9497 or Sandy Kinzel at Currituck County Schools at 232-2223. |
Room in the Inn Going Strong
The Room in the Inn program, which offers a warm bed to Outer Banks residents who lack decent housing, opened its doors January 4 and has since been growing.
The program offers as many as 12 guests a free place to sleep in a local church, every night. In addition to a simple bed, guests receive a hot dinner and a breakfast. Local congregations host the program on a rotating basis.
Participants to date have included St. Andrews Episcopal in Nags Head, Roanoke Island Presbyterian in Manteo. Haven Creek Baptist in Manns Harbor, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Kitty Hawk, and All Saints Episcopal in Southern Shores. Bethany United Methodist Church in Wanchese also plans to host guests. The program is slated to run through the end of February.
So far the beds have not all been filled. Churches have hosted up to eight guests each evening. "We think more will come as word gets out," says Claiborne Yarbrough, a founder of the program. "This is a pilot program, and we're still waiting to see what the needs are in the community. But we've heard about people living in their cars. We want them to know they're welcome to come inside and be warm."
People lose their homes for many different reasons. Some are facing economic disaster for the first time because of the recent downturn in the construction industry. Others have had a medical calamity for which they didn't have health insurance. Still others face struggles with mental illness or addiction and need help in overcoming them.
Guests at Room in the Inn are asked to follow some simple rules, and there is a strict policy against drugs, alcohol, fighting, and swearing. People seeking space should come to the Community Development Corporation building at Mustian Street and W. Carlton Avenue between 5 and 6 p.m. each evening. Guests will be transported to the appropriate church from there. On Roanoke Island, potential guests may come to the Dare County Department of Social Services on Exeter Street (behind Food-A-Rama) from 3:30 to 4:30 on weekdays.
If you have questions or would like to volunteer for the program, please call Gail at 207-8820.
