Currituck Going Green
Currituck County and NC Cooperative Extension are hosting a "Going Green" event on Saturday, January 31, 2009.  The event will be held at the NC Cooperative Extension Center,   120 Community Way, Barco (next to Central Elementary School) from 9am-3pm.  This event is free and open to the public.  Citizens and business owners will have the opportunity to learn how they can contribute to the global going green movement.

Help with Heating this Winter
The Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) helps low-income households who are in a heating related emergency. This program can help pay for various types of heating sources, including fuel oil, kerosene, gas or wood.

In addition, CIP can help pay electric heating bills to prevent these utilities from being cut off due to a TEMPORARY inability to make payment, and can help with reconnect fees. CIP can also help pay for specific items such as utility deposits (water bills not included), repairing a broken heater or replacing a broken window.

Please contact Currituck County Dept. of Social Services at  232-3083 for more information.

Z Smith Reynolds Foundation Begins Small Grants Program.

The Foundation funds charitable, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organizations and government entities for programs and projects that serve the people of North Carolina and address the results sought within five current focus areas:
  • Community Economic Development
  • Democracy and Civic Engagement
  • Environment
  • Pre-Collegiate Education
  • Social Justice and Equity
The Foundation now offers a NEW streamlined Small Grants Process for grant requests up to $35,000 per year for up to two years. Deadline is February 16. Visit www.zsr.org for application, more information and a list of recipients, programs, and uses to which the Foundation does not make grants.

State Children's Health Insurance
PLEASE CALL SENATOR KAY HAGAN, D-NC and ask her to vote for the SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) reauthorization legislation.  Senator Hagan is a strong supporter of this program but we have learned that she is hearing from many tobacco advocates in our state who are opposed to the increased tax on tobacco as a means of financing SCHIP.

North Carolina stands to gain more than $100 million in federal funding if children's health insurance is reauthorized.

You can call Senator Kay Hagan at 202-224-6342 or visit her website to send her an email at Senator_Hagan@hagan.senate.gov.
Be a Buddy

Every child can benefit from having a positive role model, someone to provide support and encouragement!

Persons interested in becoming a "buddy" may call or visit any elementary school counselor, or contact Melissa Jensen, Communications Specialist, at 232-2223 or mjensen@currituck.k12.nc.us

Friends of the Currituck Library
