IMMIGRATION The Economic Impact in Dare County

Excellent program, not to be missed information on Immigration Issues in Dare County. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Dare County on THURSDAY. JANUARY 15, 2009, Pitts Center, Southern Shores Town Hall, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Two panels of local experts will present this program. Amy Huggins will be the moderator of the Labor Force Panel, which will have owners or representatives from the major industry groups in DareCounty as panelists. The second Community Services Panel will be facilitated by Mary Ellen Hawthorne. This panel will have local experts from several governmental and nonprofit organizations that provide services in DareCounty and also provide these services to immigrants. The LWV is sponsoring this program in the hope that the community will acquire a more complete understanding of the importance of immigrants to our local economy as well as the challenges faced by this portion of our labor force in obtaining necessary services. This program will not be a debate about the legal status of immigrants who come here for work, as that debate must ultimately be resolved by the U. S. Government. Although some panelists may wish to talk about the measures they are required to take to employ immigrants, because this is a challenge for them, the focus of this program is on the immigrants themselves - including why they are here and the challenges they face while they work in our industries and seek services. PUBLIC IS INVITED.

Room in the Inn, Homeless Shelter needs volunteer groups
If you want to help at the new homeless shelter, contact your minister about serving.
The Room in the Inn provides temporary overnight hospitality for those without shelter during the coldest winter months through the generosity of congregations and other volunteers. It is not a shelter, but a temporary safe place that may help link those in need with community resources. Hopefully, Room in the Inn will lift spirits and affirm individuals in taking the next healthy step. Or, in the very least, keep some folks warm and safe and fed who otherwise might not be.
