Are you familiar with the saying, "From shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations"?  A similar saying is found in just about every culture around the globe. It simply means the first generation creates, the second preserves, and the third consumes. Put another way, after three generations, family wealth is usually right back where it started.

 

In the financial planning world, this is a regular conversation regarding estate planning. For many, there's a concern that too much money can ruin an individual's motivation and squander a family's fortune. So many stories exist about affluent beneficiaries gone bad, money wasted on lavish material goods, drug/alcohol abuse and many other indiscretions. "Dr. Phil-like" experts are forever warning that lavish inheritances may yield idle, irresponsible brats.

That's the lesson at the heart of a new report from the MetLife Mature Market Institute and the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University. The study asserts that women - given the unique financial risks they face during their working years and in later life - should take "charge of their futures in a more forceful way that accounts for [such] risks."
