Welcome

Greetings!

Being an entrepreneurs ourselves, we always like to support budding entrepreneurs. One of my favorite ways is through the  lemonade stand. Rarely do I ever drive by without stopping. Here are some highlights from this summer.

I've experiences some creative marketing efforts such as the sister & her friend who were offering a Hershey kiss with every purchase. The other sister was in the house baking fresh cookies and they wanted to make sure they sold more than she did so they offered their own incentive. Or the stand that offered optional diced strawberries in your pink or regular lemonade. We even stopped at a "smoothie" stand in the Berkshires a few weeks ago.

The standard rate for a cup of lemonade seems to be $.50. (The smoothie was $2.00). Some neighborhood kids set up their stand and were selling a cup for $1.00. Another neighbor and I arrived at the same time & with the same reaction--we weren't willing to pay that price. However, we would pay $.50. We'll, he was beside himself.  His older brothers had left him in charge while they went off to ride bikes (already bored). They left strict instructions: lemonade is a $1.00! We'll we said, he could either have no sales or make $1.50 (since I was buying two cups anyhow). He reluctantly agreed to make the sales. Tony got is first economics lesson that day.

Next time you those , support your local young entrepreneur. Stop at a lemonade stand. Want to help someone create their own stand? Check out this video.

Enjoy,

INVESTORS, PLANS AND MONEY: One must be brave on the quest for income

Many investors are seeking higher yields to meet their growing income needs. In today's interest rate environment, it's tough to find a respectable yield without taking on excessive risk.  Preferred stock is an investment you may want to take a look at to increase the yield in your income portfolio.  As with any investment, make sure you understand the risks and the tax consequences.

Preferred securities have historically offered the highest yield in the investment grade fixed income market, which makes them an attractive alternative to your portfolio.  The Value Line Investment Survey lists the overall preferred stock yield at 6.08 percent compared to 3.04 percent for the 10-year treasury.

'Must . . . buy . . . things'

Zombie consumers roam store aisles looking for ways to spend rather than reasons not to. Don't let a sale or wacky math turn you into a mindless spender.

Taking a bath on your pool
