Welcome

Greetings!

Wow! What a great summer. It's been a summer of "firsts".

TanglewoodAttended my first "Opening Night" at Tanglewood where we had a delightful picnic dinner. We went to "The Spit"--a beautiful "spit" of land connected at low tide or accessible by boat off the coast of Scituate. Took a lovely ride through the Cape Cod Canal as we took in a great lunch at the Chart Room in Cataumet.

But my biggest thrill was seeing a black bear in our yard in the Berkshires. I had been reading in the hammock only 20 minutes before moving to the porch. My back was to the side yard when I heard a bit of rustling but it is usually the birds in the leaves under the trees. When I heard it again, I turned around to look. There she was--about 30 feet away. She was beautiful. I called for Bill to come see her as well. He arrived in time to see her stand up before she tried to leave the yard but there is a wire fence she could not climb. She retreated back and slipped down the side near the laundry on the clothes line. About a minute later we heard a car come to a full stop as she crossed the main road. It was a thrill! However, I definitely look around a bit more each time I step outside.

Still on the "firsts" list...a Cape Cod Baseball league game! What about you? Any "firsts" this summer?

Enjoy,

From Bill's Corner...

Take a long look at your short-term gains

In 2011, short-term capital gains will be topping out at 39.6 percent.  Your silent partner, Uncle Sam, is making sure nothing slips by. This may surprise many unknowing investors.  The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 included new tax-reporting requirements that will dramatically change the way investors think about cost basis.

As the changes are phased in over the next few years, the transition will definitely create some confusion, and may inadvertently eliminate some last minute tax lot accounting strategies.

5 secrets of successful career changers

Tolstoy wrote that unhappy people are each unhappy in their own way. The same can be said of American workers today.

How to make better investment choices

Choice is powerful. It means you have the freedom to find just the right breakfast cereal, car, or mutual fund that suits you.

But choice also overwhelms.

Restore order to your garage

No room in your garage ... for your cars? Welcome to the club. A quarter of Americans with two-car garages can't park in theirs, and another third can squeeze in only one vehicle, according to the Department of Energy. Getting a grip on the jumble of yard tools, sports gear, and random junk is daunting, sure. But you'll make the space more attractive and useful -- and spare your car from the elements too. Just follow this game plan.

A do-good vacation

If herding to and from photo spots with a busload of tourists or lounging your day away beneath a scorching sun isn't necessarily your idea of vacation paradise, there are more meaningful vacation options available.
