2010 is in full swing now. If you've set some intentions for the New Year, we hope you are still on track.

Those of you who know me well, know I tend to be involved in quite a few activities. I feel very fortunate to be able to share my talents with others. But I also have to remember to keep some balance in my life. Last year I started a regular yoga practice which has been so helpful for my body, mind and spirit!

Sunrise on Duxbury BayLast week I had an early morning meeting in Quincy. It was later than I wanted to leave. Oh, the traffic would be aweful!

But, as I pulled out of the driveway, there were these brilliant streaks of pink in the sky. I was immediately drawn to the waterfront. I could not miss the oppo
rtunity to catch a winter's sunrise over Duxbury bay. A simple decision to bring balance to my life. As you can see, it was delightful.

From Bill's Corner...

The Scott Brown U.S. Senatorial victory that took place in Massachusetts this past week was historic. I couldn't let this month's commentary pass without saying a few words about politics. I have never witnessed an event like this in my lifetime.  Overnight, Scott Brown went from a "no name" state senator to "place in history secure US Senator"! Fascinating to watch!

Why do we get so worked up over politics? I have spent a lot of time pondering that very question. My theory is we ultimately align ourselves with a candidate that has a similar value system, and that value system is under attack from an opposing candidate. I also believe that we are always on a collision course with the future. We believe that by electing certain candidates we can change, alter, and even predict the future. But, we can't. That uncertainty makes us a little crazed.

Yes, I know you read Bill's Corner for financial insight rather than political.  So let me ponder a financial question. Is the amount of money spent on an election campaign obscene? No. In a typical election period which includes campaigns for the Presidency, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, about $1 billion is spent. It sounds like a lot of money, but let's measure it against something less important. It is the same than amount that Americans spend every year on chewing gum.  Americans spend over $2 billion annually on Halloween candy! Personally, I'd rather invest in democracy than chewing gum. So this is a "BUY" recommendation for investing in future political candidates.

In closing, I have always had the utmost respect for politicians. I often disagree with their policies. Many get themselves into shenanigans from time to time, but ultimately, politicians are huge risk takers with nerves of steel.
