Saturday, Nov. 3, TMI - The Episcopal School of Texas will hold an Open House at 8:45 am in the school's Alkek Refectory at 20955 W. Tejas Trail. The Rev. Lloyd Johnson was admitted to the hospital following some tests last week that determined a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia AML. He is in Methodist hospital in San Antonio preparing for chemo-therapy which began this week. Please keep both Lloyd and Janie in your prayers.
Mrs. DruEtta Camp Coon, mother of the Rev. Nancy Coon, died on Friday, October 5, at the age of 102 yrs, 9 months. Her funeral will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, October 15, at the Cathedral Chapel of Saint John at the Bishop Jones Center, with a reception to follow in the Mission Room. Friends from around the Diocese are welcome to come and celebrate her life with the family. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
Churches and Other Events
Friday and Saturday, October 12-13, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine will present a program entitled Jesus, Judaism, and Jewish-Christian Relations. Levine will speak at Temple Beth-El on Friday evening at their regular weekly Shabbat service at 6:30 pm. Saturday, she will give three presentations at Trinity University. The Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi, will host the Texas Regional Carillon Gathering for a carillon recital on Friday, October 19, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, and Saturday, October 20, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Bring a picnic basket and sit out on the lawn overlooking the bay and enjoy an evening recital performed by regional carilloneurs on the 48 bell Memorial Carillon. There is no cost, just bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy a beautiful October evening listening to the bells on the bluff.
Saturday, October 20, St. Thomas Church and School, San Antonio, will hold their Fall Festival and Pumpkin Patch at 10:00 am. There will be a food truck rally for concessions and South Texas vendors with Christmas gifts and arts and crafts for sale. There will be a raffle and a dunking booth, pumpkins in the patch will be for sale, and kids can enjoy a hay ride, try to solve the hay maze, face painting, and bouncing boxes. Saturday, November 10, Michael Battle will speak at the Whitley Theological Center at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, from 9:00 am to noon. His topic will be Compassion in the Christian Tradition. Cost for the lecture, which is part of the Portraits of World Mysticism series that Oblate is sponsoring, is $40. Mike Marsh, rector of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Uvalde, with questions for reflection; audio interviews with both clergy and laity; and a PowerPoint/Adobe Reader presentation of the Creed in words and photos. BISHOP JOHN W. HOWE, newly retired bishop of Central Florida, will be the guest speaker at the 2012 Bishop Elliott Lectures November 9-10 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, San Antonio. He will speak on the topic of his new book, Anointed by the Spirit, a study of the ministry of Jesus and his followers. The Friday evening program begins with registration at 5:00 p.m. and includes supper. Saturday Nov. 10 breakfast begins at 8:30 and Bishop Howe will present two lectures, concluding at noon.
