Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Music on The Deck
Harmony Hill Bed and Breakfast will be hosting music every Friday night, 7-9p, for the month of October. Pack a lawn chair and come enjoy local talent and beautiful fall views. McRitchie Winery and Ciderworks will be at Harmony Hill each Friday night to sell their wine.

Slingin' Mud for the Easter Seals

Make plans to check out the Mud Sling, Saturday, October 6, beginning at 10a. The event will be held at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds and features special guest, Big Juicy from the hit show, Lizard Lick Towing. The mud sling will benefit the Easter Seals. Gates open at 10a for registration. $10 admission for adults, children 12 and under are Free. Registration is $10, trophies will be awarded to winners. 336-657-1847 or 336-657-8395.

Harvest Day at Brinegar Cabin   
Saturday, October 6 will be harvest day at Brinegar Cabin from 10a to 4p. Autumn is the time to finish harvesting crops and put the garden to bed for the winter. Come enjoy apple butter making and other food preservation skills, a Belgian work horse plowing the garden under, and other activities that the early mountain settlers had to accomplish before the harsh winter weather set in. Brinegar Cabin is located at milepost 238 on Blue Ridge Parkway.
15th Annual Wine Tasting 
Thistle Meadow will be hosting their annual wine tasting on Sunday, October 7, 12 noon - 5p. Local vintners showcase their wines to the public. There is a $5 admission charge that includes a complimentary wine glass. Fall Heritage Music Series
There will be a Fall Heritage Music Series on three successive Sundays afternoons in October at the Blue Ridge Music Center. On Sunday, October 7, at 2p, the Blue Ridge Music Center will kick off this indoor series with a tribute to the influential husband/wife singing duo, E.C. and Orna Ball. Participating musicians in the E.C. & Orna Ball Tribute will be Wayne Henderson of Rugby, VA, Randy and Deborah-Jean Sheets from Vilas, NC and Mac and Jenny Traynham from Willis, VA. Fine fingerstyle guitar tunes and beautiful duet singing will be heard. Wayne Henderson will also be performing on the late E.C. Ball's guitar. Since seating is limited, reservations are recommended. NC Live.org Class
Learn about the abundant resources found on NC Live. Search through the different databases for periodicals, academic searches, legal information, different test preparations, and career information. The class will be offered on Wednesday, October 10 at 6p at the Alleghany County Library. There are a limited number of spaces available, so please call ahead to reserve your place. New Member Spotlight: The Cake Diva (PS.Come try a cupcake!)        
Robin Rector is the Cake Diva. She owns and operates a bakery in Sparta. The Cake Diva offers a wide variety of baked goods and custom designed cakes in any flavor for any occasion. Robin has graciously brought us cupcakes today and they are delicious! Pumpkin spice filled with Butter Pecan Cream Cheese and topped with a Cream Cheese frosting. Alleghany Boosters Fall Festival
Saturday, October 13, the Alleghany Boosters Club invites everyone to come to their Fall Festival at Crouse Park. The festival is from 12-5p and includes local band, 5Play, concessions, face painting, cornhole tournament, a pumpkin carving contest and a pumpkin painting contest. There will also be pumpkins for sale.  
Alleghany Wellness Center Corn hole Tournament The first annual tournament is Saturday, October 13, beginning at 2p at the Alleghany High School Old Gym. This is a double elimination tournament and side games and concessions will be available. Call or visit the Wellness Center to register. Registration is $20 per team. Prizes include: 3 month family membership to the Wellness Center, 1 month individual membership, Wellness Center T-Shirts, Wellness center day/class passes and more. 336-372-2944
Annual Halloween Trunk or Treat
Crouse Park will be the location of the Trunk or Treat again this year which will take place on October 31 from 5-7p. Everyone is invited to take part in this event. Whether you decorate your trunk, donate candy or bring your little ones, please plan to attend. There will be costume contests and music.
