Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 Mountain Heritage Festival September 15
This year's festival is this Saturday and we have an outstanding list of entertainers, including Kelley and the Cowboys, Junior Appalachian Musicians, The Crooked Road Ramblers, the Rise and Shine Band and Jubilee dancers. Over 100 demonstrators, craft and food vendors will line Main Street from 10a-4:30p. Visit the Mountain Heritage page for more information and updates on the Festival.  Also, the Mountain Heritage Run, 5k & 10K, will be taking place Saturday, the 15 with registration beginning at 7a in Crouse Park. Meeting of the Minds: Show 7
 
Presented by ACT Readers Theatre, the 7th show of Meeting of the Minds is a continuation of the discussion with Susan B. Anthony, Sir Frances Bacon, Emiliano Zapata and Socrates. With 2 chances to catch the show, don't miss it. Thursday, September 13 at Alleghany Senior Center at 7p and Friday, September 14 at the Library at 7p. The Magic Show's Triple Show Saturday
September 15, The Magic Show on Main Street will be presenting three shows on Saturday during the Mountain Heritage Festival. The show times are 10:30a, 12:30p, and 2:30p with half price tickets. There is limited seating so if you plan to attend, come early to insure a ticket. The show is located at 22 S. Main Street and with several chances to catch the show don't miss it.  
Books-n-Friends Gigantic Sale
The bookstore at 35 N Main Street is having a store-wide 1/2 price sale Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15. Store hours are 10a-4p on Mondays, 10a-5p Tuesday through Saturday. All proceeds benefit the Alleghany County Public Library. 
Self Defense Class 
Joe Flowers will be instructing part two of the class on Monday, September 17, at 7p. Joe is a Martial Arts Instructor at the Alleghany Wellness Center, where he regularly teaches kids and adults martial arts. He teaches Shotokan Karate, and also teaches techniques from Judo, muay thai, brazilian ju-jitsu, and tae-kwon-do. He will be teaching real world defense skills and drills, and also talk about awareness at the library. There is no charge for attending the class but pre-registration is requested. Forest Ridge Assisted Living Fall Festival
The second-annual Fall Festival is slated for September 15, at 12 noon at Forest Ridge Assisted Living at 151 Village Park Drive in West Jefferson. The festival offers an array of entertainment, including music from local talents, hay rides, inflatables for the kids, and a good ole' fashioned pig pickin'. Festivities are planned to run through 4pm. The kick off at Noon includes musical performances by various bluegrass bands and Ashe County High marching bands. The festival is just one part in a week filled with events. The week of September 9 through September 15 is National Assisted Living Week and Forest Ridge is offering many events throughout the week to celebrate including an antique car show, a Talent Show, and more. Community Health Fair 
This year Alleghany Memorial Hospital is teaming up with Blue Ridge Electric to help the community get healthy. Come learn about CPR, infection control, sleep disorders, and many more hospital services. There will be free services offered including blood pressure checks, and blood sugar testing. AMH staff will be onsite educating people and offering screenings on diabetes, strokes, COPD, and women's health. Complete blood work testing will also be available. This test would normal cost up to $400 but thanks to a grant from the Blue Ridge Electric Members Foundation, it is only $25. Blood work testing does require fasting and a reservation. Please call 336-372-3129, appointments are limited to the first 200 to call before Monday, September 17. 
Art Classes Offered at Studio Redwood
Chris Davis, local artist and shop owner, will be offering art classes for youth and adults during the Fall and Winter months. 
Adult Art Classes~ $15/ class Wednesdays, 10-Noon Beginning September 19.
After School Art Classes~Ages 6-12 $10/class plus $25 supply fee. 
Wednesdays, 2:30-3:30 & 4:30-5:30 Begins September 19. 
6 Beginning Faux Finishes~ $195 All Supplies Furnished Wednesday, Dec. 5th, 10a-3p or Saturday, Dec. 8th 10a-3p.
