Come to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 7p and the first Friday of every month at 7p. Admission $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Alleghany Uprising, this Music in the Park event features local rock bands who are teaming up with Relay for Life in association with the American Cancer Society for a day filled with live music for a good cause. This free event starts at 4p on Saturday, August 25 in Crouse Park. Local bands include Stain Glass Shadows of Mt. Airy, Kibosh of Mt. Airy, Without a Fight of Radford, Monstrock of Wytheville, Any Given Day of Sparta, and Fuzion of Galax, all of the heavy metal, rock or pop genre. Concessions will be available onsite by the Razors Edge Skatepark and Youth Ministry. For more information visit their facebook page.  
Toe Tappin' Times
With several musical performances this week and into the weekend, you will be cutting a rug for sure. Thursday night, August 23, there will be music at the Library with John Akerman and John Wenberg. Plan to be there at 7p to listen as these two musicians perform on the piano and banjo. Friday night, head to Nikola's in Roaring Gap for a performance by the Almost Irish Band at 7p. No cover charge, just come enjoy the music and great food. Saturday head to Music in the Park for Alleghany Uprising starting at 4p. Sunday, The Cameronian Quartet will be in concert at the Sparta Presbyterian Church at 5p. The quartet, in existence since 1990, is based out of the Cameronian Presbyterian Church in Rockingham. The free concert is open to the community as part of the Summer Concert Series hosted by the Sparta Presbyterian Church.

New Member Spotlight: Joe's Taqueria & Grill This new restaurant just opened last week in the old Sparta Restaurant location, 41 N Main. The authentic Mexican eatery has an extensive lunch and dinner menu and is open 7 days a week from 10a-10p. So stop in and try out their food. Be sure to tell them we sent you. Dialogue Matters The reading and discussion group will meet on Monday, August 27 to discuss the book, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. The meeting will be from 11:15a-1:30p at the Blue Ridge Development Center in Sparta. Bring a bag lunch and join the discussion. The group meets the forth Monday of every month. Books and future meetings are as follows: 9/24 - Imagine by Jonah Lehrer, 10/22 - Life and Times of Ray Hicks by Lynn Salsi, 11/26 - The Good Among the Great by Donald Van de Mark. Businesses Open Late 8/31
Several downtown businesses will be open late on Friday, August 31. Backwoods Bean Coffee Shop will have their monthly wine tasting from 6-8p featuring wines from Shelton Vineyards. Rob Mangum and Donna Lama will also be there performing. Studio Redwood, Murphy's Mercantile, Farmer's Hardware, Touch of Grace, Kaquoli Jayli, Season's, and Gill's Jeans & Things will all be open until 6:30p. Imaging Specialist will be open until 8p. After work on Friday come downtown to unwind, do some shopping, try some new wine and enjoy the music!
