Come to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 7p and the first Friday of every month at 7p. Admission $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Music in the Park, this Saturday features Summit Strings, a professional group of experienced musicians. From the Beatles' "Yesterday", to Mozart's "Eine Klein Nachtmusik" to Coldplay's "Clocks", they can play any song that can be arranged for strings. Music starts at 6p, August 18 in  Crouse Park.
Demolition Saturday 
The Demolition Derby is slated for the 18, 6p at the Fairgrounds. Gates open at 5p and competition begins at 6p. Full size cars, compact cars and minivans are welcome. If you dare to enter, contact Mike Parlier 704-929-9629 or Jim Wyatt 336-414-7561. With a $2,000 total purse and trophies, there just might be a few soccer moms willing to enter their minivans! Admission is $8, children under 10 are free with paying adult. All proceeds benefit the Sparta Masonic Lodge and Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department. 
4-H Fun and Games Fair August 23 - 25, Alleghany 4-H will be having a small fair. On Thursday, beginning at 5:30p there will be horse rides, games and facepainting for children. Friday is slated for a corn hole tournament beginning at 6p and Saturday is the annual 4-H Horseshow for Youth and adults at 10a. Faux Finishes for Fun!
Come learn 6 finishes with Chris Davis at Studio Redwood - all the supplies furnished. Monday, August 20 4-9p. For ages 16 and up, with a limited class size, please register soon to insure a slot in the class. Registration is $195 and ends August 16. The Magic Show to Host Food Closet Benefit The Magic Show at 22 S Main Street will be presenting a trio of benefit shows for the Solid Rock Food Closet. Featuring Michael Keating, an internationally renowned magician. Shows will be Friday, the 17, at 7p and Saturday, the 18, at 1p and 7p. Tickets available at the door for $2. All funds raised from this weekends shows will benefit the food closet. Seating is limited so you may want to come early.  
Canning & Food Preservation
Has your garden provided an abundance of produce this year and you are just not sure what to do with it all? Check out the Canning and Food preservation class offered by the Extension Community Association Leader, Eva Rice. This class will be held Monday, August 20 at 5:30p in the Highland Village Community Center Multi-Purpose room. Register at the Alleghany Cooperative Extension office by August 17, call 336-372-5597.
