Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Craft weekend  begins on Friday with the Blue Ridge Mountain Fair starting at 2p and continues until 7p in Crouse Park. Saturday, the Fair begins at 9a until 5p. Many of the vendors at the event are local artisans whose original items reflect their talents. The Crouse Stage will be busy with entertainment Friday and Saturday, including the Drones, the Crooked Road Band and the Zephyr Lightning Bolts. Line dancers and cloggers will perform as well. A jam tent will be setup for pickers to come play informally.  
 
Friday and Saturday, the Alleghany Quilters Guild is hosting the 16 annual Quilt Show from 10a to 4p. The show will be at the Emerson Black Building at the County Fairgrounds. Clost to 90 quilts will be on display and attendees will be given a ballot to vote for their favorite in each category. This year's raffle quilt, made by the guild members, includes blocks displayed throughout the county on barn and other buildings. The drawing to win this bed quilt will be held at the December craft fair and the funds raised will benefit guild projects. Admission and shuttle services are free and donations will be greatly appreciated. 
Mountain Music at the Library Make plans to come to the Alleghany Library for their Hometown & Heritage program, 'Mountain Music', with Ronald and Ellie Kirby. Cater Pots Demo 
Robin and Daniel Cater will demonstrate wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery in their studio, Thursday, July 26 at 6p. Light refreshments and social time will follow the 30 minute demonstration presented by the Alleghany Art Guild. The Caters will also be hosting an Open House August 2nd-4th at their studio, 209 Antioch Church Road in Sparta. See lots of new work ranging from large wall hangings, contemporary sculpture to functional pieces. 336-372-4604 
Alleghany Wellness Center hosts Blood Drive and Life Line Screenings on Monday, July 30 4-8:30p. All blood types are needed to pump up the blood supply. For an appointment please call 336-372-2944. All presenting donors are automatically entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $3000 gift card. On Wednesday, August 22, the Wellness Center will be offering screenings in conjunction with the Helping Hands program, Life Line Screening. Register today to receive a $10 discount. Also, for every Wellness Center member who signs up, the program will make a $10 donation to the Wellness Center.
