Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10a to 5p. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
 
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW:

SATURDAY JULY 4TH CELEBRATION KICKOFF: Start you elebration of this country's independence 2p this Saturday, with the big parade down Main Street. Heading up the long line of homemade floats, antique cars and marchers will be Rudolph Edwards, parade marshal. Parade entries will line up in the parking lot north of Sparta School, 450 North Main Street, beginning at 1p. It's not to late to enter. Pre-register by calling 336-372-6135 or just be at the Sparta School parking lot at 1p.
A correction to last week's Brief. Buckaroo's Grille at the intersection of NC 113 and 93 in Piney Creek is open noon to 11a-8p Thursday through Saturday and 11a-2p on Sunday. And their Bluffs Coffeehouse fried chicken is delicious!
CHATEAU LAURINDA FEATURED: Check your listings to catch "Grape Expectations," a documentary on the NC wine industry that features Alleghany County's Chateau Laurinda Winery, 690 Reeves Ridge Road. The Clay Johnson documentary produced for Raleigh's WRAL will also be aired on Charlotte stations WJZY on Saturday, July 14 at 5p, and WMYT on Sunday, July 8 at 10:30p.
SEAZUNS PLEAZUNS ENTERTAIN:
   You loved them in the 70s and 80s and now they are back, better than ever. Alleghany's own Seazuns Pleazuns will be helping to kick off the July 4th celebration with a FREE concert in Crouse Park, Saturday, June 30, beginning at 6p. Concessions will be available and be sure to bring a lawn chair or a blanket to spread out on the grass. Come early and claim one of the cool spots under the big shade tree. 
   And don't miss Tailgating and Fireworks in the AHS Parking Lot beginning at 6p Wednesday, July 4. Lots of music, food and friends. A bounce house is planned for the kids336-372-5473
ARTIST BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE: 
Be amazed as Bryan Smith breathes life into our country's early days as he demonstrates his portrait skill. Long a fan of historical re-enactments, Smith has used his talent to capture the look of the participants. The Alleghany Art Gill hosts his demonstration Thursday at 6p in the Alleghany Arts and Craft store, 36 N. Main St. No admission is charged and light refreshments will be served. 336-372-1776
ART IN THE BARN: Bring a little art into your life with a visit to Motsinger's Art in the Barn, 147 Camp Butler Road, July 5-7, 10a-4p. Some of the area's most experienced artists will be displaying jewelry, papermache, sculpture, pottery and more for sale. Pictured is Robin Cater of Cater Pots. Her husband Daniel will have some of his metal sculpture for sale. 
BRIDGE DEDICATED: Local officials as well as DOT and Highway Patrol representatives were in Sparta on Wednesday to name the US 21 South Bridge over Little River in honor of Patrolman W.H. Hogan and Sparta Police Chief C.B. Taylor who died in 1948 pursuing a vehicle carrying moonshine from Sparta to Wytheville, VA. Shown are Ken Richardson, Chair of the Board of Commissioners; NC Highway Patrol First Sergeant Brian Sharpe and Patrol Colonel Michael Gilchrist.
