Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10a to 5p. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
 
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW:

BLUFFS COFFEESHOP CHICKEN AT BUCKAROOS: Buckaroo's Grille has acquired the Parkway Coffee Shop chef and his wife and they are cooking up a storm.  After cooking on the Parkway for over 20 years they bring to the restaurant a new taste of country to match the beautiful décor.  Their famous Country Fried Chicken was recognized by Our State Magazine as one of the best in the State.  The chicken, along with some wonderful sides, is served all day long for lunch and dinner.  Another one of their specialties is the Buckaroo's BBQ Cakes which is a delicious combination of BBQ and Slaw between two golden corn pancakes.  The Country Ham is also a favorite.  The sides are all homemade and they include items like mashed potatoes, mac 'n cheese, vegetables and a lot more sides made fresh every day.  They also make bread pudding and other homemade desserts. The prices are extremely affordable staring at only $5.95 and the Country Style Half Chicken with two sides is only $10.95. Restaurant hours areSaturday 11a-9p and Sundays 11a-4p.

BIRDSONGS HEADLINE MUSIC IN PARK: The noted contemporary Christian music band The Birdsongs will be at this Saturday's Youth Festival in Crouse Park. Other performers include Stain Glass Shadows, Pete McMeans, Strong as Life, Zack and Cody Hamm, Little Pine Church of the Brethren Youth Dramma Team. Games of S.K.A.T.E. throughout the Day. BE LUCKY RUBBER DUCKY: Una's River Bottom will be hosting the New River Shrine Club Duck Race this Saturday beginning at 12 noon.  There will be food, fun, games and a bounce house for the kids. On page 30 of the July/August Issue of Blue Ridge Country Brown's Restaurant and their great home cooking is featured as part of their food tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It also mentions Sparta on page 25 in a blurb about small mountain towns. 
 
YOUR KID CAN FISH WITH A RANGER:
Join a New River Park Ranger this Saturday at 9:30a at the Wagoner Road Access for some kids fishing fun. You will learn basic skills for casting and knot tying, then go down to the river and fish. Space is limited so please call (336-982-2587) to sign-up for this program.
