Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10a to 5p. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
 
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW:

Big Music Weekend
 
 
JD Higgins will emcee a tribute to the late Del Reeves, native son and member of the Grand Ol' Opry, Saturday at the Silver Dollar Music Park. Higgins will be joined by Billy C. Smith and the Real Deal and promise an entertaining evening and a surprise or two (I know but I aint tellin'). Admission $8. Henderson and Little headline LUKEfest 
in Crouse Park on Sunday. Join your friends on the Park lawn for an evening of great bands and performers beginning at 2p and ending sometime in the early evening. Also appearing: Prodigal Son, Rob Mangum, Seazuns Pleazuns, Caleb Smith, the Shaw Brothers, Blues DeVille, and the Drones. Wayne Henderson and Jeff Little owe a lot to the late Doc Watson and I expect they will be sharing some of their thoughts on his passing. The event is named in honor of AHS athlete Luke Hampton and is a benefit for all AHS students with extreme medical needs. No admission charged, but donations are appreciated. Bring a lawn chair and a light jacket. A cool day is forecast. Highway 52 at the Library This Mt. Airy band will be performing their brand of bluegrass and bluegrass gospel at the Alleghany Library, Monday, June 4. Brothers Rodney and Tony Alexander are joined by Tim Chadwick and Jackie Dunevant. The program begins at 7p and is part of the Hometown Heritage series, funded by the Alleghant Arts Council. Farmers Market Draws Big Crowd
With nearly 200 visitors every Saturday, Alleghany Farmers Market is doing well at its new location in Crouse Park. June is Dairy Month and the market will be featuring dairy products from a local goat farmer as well as a cooking demonstration this Saturday. Fresh produce includes lettuce mixes, beet greens, Swiss chard, spring onions, and kale. Vegetable plants, including heirloom varieties, bedding plants, and hanging baskets abound. Jams and jellies; hand crafted jewelry and unique fabric designs round out the selection. Alleghany Farmers Market is open 8a-1p every Saturday, and 4-6p Thursdays beginning June 14.
 
OPRY Talent Showcase
Held every 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month, Silver Dollar Music Park hosts a talent show. Doors open at 5:30p for dinner and shows start at 7p. This Friday, June 1 is the 2nd Open Competition with a chance to win $500 and be on TV. Congrats to the winners of the May 18 competition: The Golden Girls. Entry fee: $10 (one-time fee) Show admission is $1 per person. Stay after the show and kick up your heels.

Volunteers needed for Dental Clinic 
Alleghany Cares is looking for volunteers and translators to assist Friday and Saturday, June 15 & 16, for the Dental Clinic at Alleghany High School. Hours range from 6a-5p on Friday and 6a-3p on Saturday. Please contact Vickie Scott at 336-372-5959.
