New Yarn Arrivals

As you well know, I really love the feel and colors of yarns.   I went shopping for new yarns in January, and this is a short list of some of the new yarns that have since arrived.

  • Malabrigo Finito These are the very anticipated new hand-dyed yarns from the finest lot of Merino wool available from Uruguay.
  • Collington Angoras The worlds finest angora mohair, imported from Australia.  We were very fortunate to have met the amazing woman and her daughters who ran the farm and built their business in the Outback.
  • Rozetti Marina Glitz  We restocked this very popular mesh yarn with fun ruffles & added "bling" for fun scarf yarns and many other uses.
  • Trendsetter Flamenco  A new, finer and lacier mesh yarn.
  • Trendsetter Zoe, a rich cotton & viscose blend.
  • Rozetti Spectra  This new yarn opens into a lacy web with a fun row of bubbles along the edge!
  • Sweet Georgia
  • Tilli Tomas New yarns from this hand dyer includes Disco Lights, 90% Spun Silk: 10% Petite Sequins;  Rock Star Spun Silk studded with European Glass beads; Symphony DK an Ultrafine Austalian superwash Merino Varigated Artisan Sock yarn.
  • Zen Yarn Garden Serenity 20 made with a super soft, Superwash Merino,  cashmere & nylon blend. Perfect for luxury socks, shawls, shawlettes, scarves or any project that calls for "next-to-the-skin" softness.
  • Zitron Unisono yarns are infused with aloe and jojoba, softens you hands while you knit or crochet and feels great when you wear it!

I am excited and certain that you will really enjoy all these new yarns for your creative, unique and beautiful works.

UFO's: A Study in Yarn
Have you unwittingly contributed to increased UFO sightings?

UFO's? In South Florida? Even at The Raging Wool Shop?

Yes, in fact, there is overwhelming evidence that they are everywhere! They lurk and glaze upon you; in your home, in your car and in your office. Yes, these UFO's are known (and sometimes cursed at) by many names, but modern research concludes that they are best described as an Un Finished Object (UFO).

Based on years of personal experience and my observations of yarn shop customers, I am convinced that these UFO's began their long journeys to your home as mere strands of highly twisted fibers from terrestrial fauna, usually of quadruped origin or exotic floras or, in some cases, highly advanced biochemical cellulose engineering technologies such as "The Rayons" (see Figure 1).

Figure 1. Rayon molecular structure
Figure 1. Rayon Molecule
UFO Beginnings. What happens next is shrouded in mystery and speculation, but, here's the generally accepted theory. At some mysterious point in time, these strands of highly twisted fibers are spun into a "skein" by (we believe, un-enslaved) humanoids, or in the case of some mass-produced UFO origins, the result of extremely advanced industrial spinning technologies. These skeins are re-spun, again, quite tightly in fact, into "spheres of yarn", or, less civilly, "balls" of yarn.

Given their long trek of being spun, re-spun and being wound, via powerful centrifugal forces, into spherical shapes, there should be no surprise that most UFO sightings are initially observed as "rotating, multi-colored, spheres". Sometimes, what appears to be needles and hooks are observed to be statically "protruding" from some of the spheres. At other times, it is observed that someone is quite deliberately, silently and slowly, entering and withdrawing these hooks and needles from the body of the sphere. These sightings are sometimes, usually when one is under the influence of alcohol, mistakenly cited as the deployment of "antennae" or "landing gear".

Multiple "spheres of yarn" are then inter-connected with these needles or hooks following a very complex printed blueprint, or "pattern" to produce a uniquely finished and universally accepted form of art which is highly valued and marveled at by humanoids, co-workers and other aliens alike. One commonly employed technique of interconnecting the yarn spheres is called "knitting" and another common technique is called "crochet".

Today's UFO problem. Regardless of the spherical interconnection technique employed, a "UFO" may unintentionally be produced! What happens is an oft-observed, but not well explained "out of this world", or an "out of body", yarn addict phenomena.  This phenomenon is experienced by knitters and crocheters since the dawn of clothing.

These spheres of fabric are craftily manipulated to rotate and be kept aloft by their terrestrial "handlers" (such as a knitter or crocheter), who are skilled at complex pattern reading and articulating the antennae and landing gears of these spheres of fabric into highly complex and beautiful art forms. Unfortunately, these rotating spheres of yarn, at some point, may inexplicably stop rotating! That's right, no longer kept aloft and manipulated by their masters, these spheres of yarn are gently 'laid to rest' on terra firma, with all good intentions to resume fabrication immediately after an interruption of the creative process.

The causes of these UFO producing interruptions are infinite. Common excuses include:

  • Needing to eat
  • Having to go-do-that-job-thing
  • Feeding or otherwise nurturing other quadrupeds, including family members
  • Being compelled to navigate complex alien thought control technology such as "Windows", "Blackberries", "iPhones" and little green Androids
  • Getting frustrated and hurling the UFO against the floor.

Once laid to rest, the yarn spheres may become idle for very long periods of time and the finished object that was intended to be fabricated lies incomplete and may remain dormant and unfinished - sometimes for weeks, sometimes for months, and sometimes for millennium!

But we have good news! There is no reason to despair! The Raging Wool Yarn Shop has developed a solution for you to complete the final fabrication of your existing Un Finished Objects! The Raging Wool Yarn Shop has, in conjunction with America's best Hollywood movie studios, has stitched together an opportunity for you to bring new life and attention to your own UFOs!

MovienightTuesday is UFO Night!
Complete your UFO while watching a movie with us!

The Blob

On any Tuesday evening, bring your own UFO (Un Finished Object) to the shop by 6:00 P.M.

Together, we'll work on the final assembly of your UFO while watching classic and campy science fiction movies! I'll be happy to provide personal assistance to you, if needed, and, of course, the friendly atmosphere of the shop is conducive for collaboration with the other yarn addicts in the shop.

You can bring your own meal (we have a microwave oven, courtesy of alien engineers), or you can order take out from one of our many nearby, terrestrial restaurants, and we'll also have a few goodies available for purchase in the shop as well.

We project a UFO or other campy classic science-fiction movie, such as, The Day The Earth Stood Still, onto a large screen so that you can comfortably sit, knit, crochet, laugh, eat and drink and enjoy making progress on your own UFO in the company of other yarn-minded earthlings. I know you'll have fun and you'll finally finish your own UFOs and be proud of completing your projects, while reliving classic Americana culture.

Here's the line-up for March. You can always check our Classes & Events page for an updated schedule of movies, events & classes, each month.

We also have huge binders of patterns from the shop's yarn suppliers and independent designers.  For your convenience, we have a sitting area where you can enjoy our freshly ground coffee and variety of teas while you browse through the shop's pattern resources in a comfortable, relaxed and supportive environment.

Additionally, any pattern on Ravelry that you order from me while you wait in the shop, can be printed in color and discussed with us, while holding the very yarns you'll be using for your pattern.  How cool is that?
