From the Office of the Mayor...

Mayor Dennis Raines
Mayor Dennis Raines

It has been a very busy three months since I was sworn in as your Mayor. I would like to personally thank former Mayor, and my friend, Don Godbey for an exceptionally smooth transition. Our first order of business in January was to rearrange our Committee structure in order to concentrate our efforts on Economic Development and getting more businesses and jobs in our City. In the near future we will have one of only two available sites in the entire Upstate that are South Carolina Department of Commerce certified. These sites are ready for a business to begin to move dirt and locate here in our City. Dunkin' Donuts should be opening in April and we have several other businesses in some form of negotiations ready to open up here in Mauldin.

In cooperation with Greenville County and the tireless efforts of Fire Chief Russell Sapp, we opened our fourth fire station on Holland Road this month and are moving closer to a 2 ISO rating that will hopefully lower insurance premiums for all of our citizens in the city and fire service area. The ISO inspection will be complete by the end of the year.

Our Police Department achieved the prestigious CALEA award (Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies) this month which holds all police departments to a higher standard in their operating

and training procedures. We congratulate Police Chief Bryan Turner and the entire department on their success.

The Cultural Center landscaping is taking shape and the Veterans Memorial is very appropriate in honoring our armed forces. Great shows are coming to the renovated auditorium and the spring will bring even greater performers to the outdoor amphitheater

As you drive down our 276 corridor progress is being made daily as you can see plantings and street lights coming up on both sides of the street. This project is slated to be finished next month and is creating a lot of positive comments from commuters.

In keeping with our city motto "Expect Great Things", there are a lot of great things happening here in our City and you can expect greater things. It is an exciting time to serve as your Mayor. I look forward to working in partnership with our great team of Council members and our dedicated city employees to ensure that we continue to provide the service levels that you are accustomed to receiving.

Mauldin Fire Department Dedicates New Station
Station 3

On March 22, 2012 Mauldin Fire and Rescue celebrated the grand opening and dedication of the newest fire station. Local officials and elected members of Mauldin City Council and Greenville County Council gathered to celebrate the opening of this much needed facility. The station was dedicated to Captain James "Pop" Leake who made a tremendous impact on many lives while serving as a member of the Mauldin Fire Department. Captain Phillip Brown gave a heartfelt speech about the relationship he had with Captain Leake. The memorial plaque was unveiled as the family of the late captain watched.

Station 3 is 11,400 square feet and is staffed by 6 firefighters- 2 per shift. The building has a life expectancy of 75 years and cost approximately $2.2 million. Because the building also serves a Greenville County rural fire district, the cost was shared with the county. The facility exemplifies energy efficient construction with solar water heating. Station 3 is located at 1821 Bethel Road. This location was strategically identified to improve ISO ratings. ISO ratings are provided by a company, ISO, that evaluates insurance risks. ISO collects information useful in many aspects of insurance underwriting. That information includes evaluations of public fire protection, flood risk, and the adoption and enforcement of building codes in individual communities. The city expects a new rating and potentially lower insurance rates for citizens as a result of this new station. For more information on the fire station click on the links below to view slideshows. Mauldin Police Attain Prestigious Status

On March 24, 2012 the Mauldin Police Department, under the leadership of Chief Bryan Turner, was awarded Advanced Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).

CALEA was created in 1979 through the combined efforts of four major Law Enforcement organizations to address issues of accountability, integrity, liability, performance, community partnership, and to elevate law enforcement to professional standing and affirm the quality of police services.

In the fall of 2007, the MPD committed itself to seeking accredited status through the Commission. Captain Roger Tripp was designated as the Law Enforcement Accreditation Manager. The 479 standards for accreditation impact officer and public safety, address liability and risk management issues, and promote operational efficiency. Because of this process our department is more professional, accountable, and the relationships with the citizens we serve are strengthened because we have changed the way we operate.

Mauldin Police Department isonly the fifteenth Municipality in the state of South Carolina, and the second in Greenville County, to obtain this coveted award.

Main Street Beautification Project Nearly Complete

Cherry blossoms and daffodil flowers made their first appearance in newly-landscaped areas along Mauldin's Main Street in mid-March, adding more color and interest to the limited private landscaping that exists in the corridor.  Installation of trees and perennial flowers was completed in February; shrubs, ground cover and mulch will be completed by the end of April.

SCDOT has managed the construction of the project with minimal disruption to business.

Main Street (US Highway 276) in Mauldin - is bustling again following tough economic times. Very little vacant retail space remains in the corridor.  Dunkin' Donuts is nearing completion of a new store at the corner of South Main Street and East Butler Road.

Decorative street lighting,to be installed by Duke Energy, will be completed in May.  Some cable and telephone lines were buried as part of the project to allow large street trees to be installed in the area near the intersection of North Main Street and Murray Drive.
