Dear Friends,
May is for moms and a topic equally important to children: mental health. This month is Mental Health Month. At Baby's Space and Tatanka Academy, mental health is a central focus of every month because we know that everyday experiences shape the social and emotional capacities of children.
The first few years of life are particularly critical in developing the architecture of how children form relationships, regulate emotions and learn. We can no longer claim that a baby is too young to notice adversity and will simply "outgrow" his troubles or is resilient and therefore unaffected by adult-oriented policies or out-of-date practices. Using the baby's point of view, we are working on strategies for engaging families, practitioners, communities, and policy makers in system-changing solutions to mental health promotion, diagnosis, and intervention.
May is also the month we celebrate mothers - an essential partner in their children's development of health and wellbeing. Enjoy the picture and tribute we've included of the many mothers, grandmothers and aunties we have on our team.
Best Regards,
Terrie Rose
