A Newsletter from Baby's Space   October, 2011 Volume 2, Issue 10

Baby's Space is a holistic, research-based approach to infant through 3rd grade education, adolescent mental health services and support for children and families residing in poverty and violence.

Dear Friends,

It's been an exciting month at Baby's Space!

School started at Tatanka Academy with a great new teaching team. The team and our nearly 40 students received a special treat when they all went on a get-to-know-you better field trip to Bush Lake and the Shoots and Ladders Park.

We also had an exciting day when a group from FedEx volunteered at Baby's Space. The volunteers were excited to be with us and eager to work. We had experienced painters, shelf builders and an electrician who made some necessary repairs for us! The group also did extensive prep for our new preschool tree house environment, which FedEx donated money toward completion.

We thank FedEx and we're saluting them as this month's Heroes. Take a peek at the pictures below.

Best Regards,

Terrie Rose

Founder and President

Heard in the Halls

Our students say things that inspire us, make us laugh and affirm that the work we do makes an impact. Here's a day brightener we'd like to share.

During construction of a new classroom environment, Baby's Space director Debbie Lund posted a sign, "No Peeking. Under Construction." A curious parent was opening the door to sneak a peek when her preschooler said, "No, mom! At school you have to listen!"

Northside Center Adopts Baby's Space Model

Baby's Space has partnered with Northside Child Development Center in Minneapolis to bring the Baby's Space model to the center.

The replication includes curriculum material, a newly-installed Baby's Space environment and personalized training conducted by Terrie Rose for the staff and director.

"Northside strongly believes in the Baby's Space model," said Kimberly Osborn, program director, "Using the curriculum and receiving Terrie's coaching has helped our staff become reliable, predictable and consistent using the baby's point of view."

A highlight came in August with the installation of a custom environment. Osborn describes the new environment, which features a tree, ramps, soft colors and natural accessories as "amazing!" She said the toddlers are moving throughout the space freely and it's helped them slow down and learn how to use a space.

Left to right, Kia Britain, Jason Adam, Emily Schmidt and Gisela Valdez

Tatanka Academy welcomes new teachers! Jason Adam loves to read and shares his love of literature with his students. Jason also loves the outdoors and gardening (he grows most of his own food!). He and his wife are the parents of a six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter. Kia Britain is returning to the Twin Cities after spending two years in the Northern Marianas Islands, which are in the Pacific Ocean. She's excited to be back in Minnesota but is fearful of the winters! Emily Schmidt taught for four years in rural Iowa. When she's not teaching, she enjoys teaching swimming lessons.
