A Newsletter from Baby's Space   July, 2011 Volume 2, Issue 7

Baby's Space is a holistic, research-based approach to infant through 3rd grade education, adolescent mental health services and parent support for children and families residing in poverty and violence.

Dear Friends,

At Baby's Space, we offer a holistic approach that includes mental health services and parent support for families residing in poverty and violence.

Postpartum depression is a serious issue facing not only our Baby's Space families, but mothers across all economic and social classes. I was recently involved with the Children's Defense Fund, Minnesota, who studied the issue and issued the report, "Maternal Depression in Early Childhood."

The report explains that infants and toddlers are impacted by postpartum depression because of their total reliance on their caregivers. The impact includes being at risk of behavior and emotional problems and delayed language development.

Minnesota has effective programs that can help mothers, but mothers at risk, which includes poor, young and mothers of color, are the ones least likely to receive help.

Baby's Space offers effective support to help our mothers with postpartum depression because we know the work we do with our moms helps children today and in the future.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Baby's Space and programs like our mental health and family services that are helping build strong families and neighborhoods.

Sincerely,

coordinator positions, stacks of resumes arrived. Our thanks to volunteer Sally Vardaman Johnson who used her human resources background to conduct initial phone interviews to par down the many applicants to a short list of candidates qualified for personal interviews.

The critical role took more than four hours of intense questioning via the telephone. Sally enjoyed the work not only as a professional but as a mom helping out an organization like Baby's Space. "I'm not an early childhood specialist, but I'm someone who has struggled mightily with my own feelings of inadequacy as a mother. I relied on support and services in many forms to help me learn to be successful in my role of mother," says Sally. "I loved talking with the candidates who had such enthusiasm for making the world a better place for the most vulnerable children."

Sally is the mother of a seven-year-old son and six-year-old twin daughters. She enjoys writing and photography and is actively interviewing to re-enter the workforce in an administrative or customer service capacity. Thank you Sally and best wishes as you reenter the workforce!

Matt Obbink and Clare Buche

This summer, Baby's Space welcomes architects Clare Buche and Matt Obbink

as interns! Clare and Matt will be developing new designs for the renowned Baby's Space classroom environments. Their summer projects include developing environments for our partners at North side and White Earth who are renovating existing classrooms.

Clare Buche is a recent graduate from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture. Clare has a background in graphic design and both parents are graphic artists. "I have a strong passion for design and am looking forward to a career in developing designs to enhance the quality of lives, which is why I'm very excited to work at Baby's Space this summer," says Clare.

Matt Obbink is currently a student in the Master's of Architecture program at Iowa State University. He received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota in 2009 and has worked as a carpenter and design drafter for a residential design build firm in St. Paul. Matt's excited to work at Baby's Space this summer because following completion of his master's degree in 2012, he plans on returning to the Twin Cities to work in the education or healthcare field.

Coughlan Companies, Inc. is awarding a $27,500 grant to Baby's Space. The grant will support one child to attend our childcare program or Tatanka Academy for one academic year and will also be used for Family Nights, the popular monthly events where Baby's Space families come together as a community and read. Coughlan Companies will supply all of the books for Family Nights and will give each child in attendance a book to take home. In addition, Coughlan Companies employees will also share their time and talent by volunteering at Family Nights.

"Coughlan Companies and Baby's Space share the common belief that early childhood development is one of the most important factors in a child's future success," said Lisa Hanson, Coughlan Companies Director of Corporate Giving. "We're very proud to support Baby's Space and the vital work they are doing to provide babies and toddlers with a strong start to a better life."
