RecruitersRantRecruiter's Rant

recruiter's rant I have been reviewing a lot of resumes lately as I have been actively recruiting a number of professional positions in the Victoria area.

One of the things that drives me crazy as a recruiter is when I receive an email with a resume and a cover letter in different word documents. So here is my tip!

When sending in a resume and cover letter by email, if you want both to be read - send in ONE document.  Cover letter followed by resume.  And here is why:
  • Saves time. I have one document to open, read and possibly print.
  • I don't get to choose to read only one of your documents - I have to read or at least scan the cover letter to get to the resume.  Sometimes if I get two documents I pick one and if it doesn't grab me I don't bother to read the other.  All that work was put into it and it wasn't even opened!
  • Documents don't get separated. If I am saving your document onto my hard drive, I can easily save together.  (oh - 2nd tip - name your documents in a professional way so that I don't have to rename it with your name on it)
  • Makes it easy to forward. If I am attaching your materials to send to another party, sending one document is more organized and easier to send.
And if you really want to look good?  Don't send in Word with a chance of the formatting changing - send in a PDF. You can make a pdf right in Word - it is easy peasy and shows effort!

Every recruiter is different and may not agree with me but that is this Recruiter's Rant!

Thought for the Week

Hello everyone!

Another big thank you to everyone who has completed the survey I am working on! The number of people who are contributing keeps rising so thank you again!

I have been heads down on recruiting this last month.  It is always so interesting to be on this side of the table - to be receiving resumes and to be reviewing applications against employer's needs and wants.  As a recruiter, I just have to give you one of my pet peeves, and maybe you can share with your clients!  Check out the new section Recruiter's Rant here! And don't you just love the picture! :-)

Hope you are enjoying your month of June!  Please be in touch anytime - I would love to hear all about how things are going for you these days!

Thanks to all of you for subscribing and enjoy your week!

BOOK YOUR FREE WORKSHOP!

For a limited time I want to offer two professional development presentations, Free of Charge, for agencies in the Lower Mainland of BC, and within Washington State. They will both be of great benefit for anyone working in the human services profession, however they each offer something specific.

The first presentation will be geared towards those who assist people through the unemployment/employment process, especially those who would be considered multi-barrier/at-risk. This presentation will focus on Understanding Trauma, and the Impact on Employability and Career.

Although my specialty is psychology, I spent over a decade working in various positions within the employment and career counselling field. My observation was that there was an odd divide between the career counselling and psychological counselling fields. Consequently, my expertise in the career counselling field was assisting clients in becoming more keenly aware of how the trauma of their past was actively undermining their employability and career success, and how to begin disintegrating those dynamics. Not only was I focused on how to support clients, but also on how to assist agencies in becoming more aware of how these dynamics, when unnoticed and unaddressed, negatively impact client success, staff morale, and attaining contracted outcomes.

The second presentation, will specifically address Trauma, Human Development, and Entitlement. Again, all human service professionals, no matter what the occupation, would benefit, however this presentation will be geared more towards those working with traumatized, at-risk, and multi-barriered populations. This presentation will synthesize two approaches - Traditional and Transpersonal. Initially trauma will be dissected from a traditional view of attachment theory and human development. From this point a transpersonal/Jungian perspective will provide further insight on the issue of trauma and human development, but will also illuminate the entitlement dynamic.

Each presentation will be 2 - 3 hours. All agencies need provide is space, basic supplies and administrative support. Again, these presentations will be offered for a very limited time, so make contact now to book your free presentation.

Sincerely,

John Solano, BA
