Thought for the Week

WOW! I just updated the issue number to 25!  That feels like a real milestone!  This service to the industry had evolved to something pretty cool and is clearly meeting a need.  I received a ton of positive feedback from people when at CDC2012 (thank you for thanking me!). It was so nice to meet you guys IRL (in real life!) as I feel like I talk to you each week!

Speaking of CDC2012, it was great to attend the event and to be able to hear so many awesome speakers.  This event has continually raised the bar for professional development for the sector and this year hit that mark again.  A big congratulations goes out to Jayne Barron for winning Career Practitioner of Year, Cyndy Greeno for Mentor of the Year and Triangle Community Resources Inc for Organization of the Year.  Whoo hoo - nice work everyone!

March is flying by already!  Hope you remembered to spring your clocks forward and that you enjoy that extra day light at the end of the day!

Thanks to all of you for subscribing an
d enjoy your week!

Job Seeker Spotlight

If you are a job seeker in the career development industry then send me a short big (a paragraph or so in length) and I will include you in an upcoming newsletter.  Be sure to include your contact information (email address would be best) and the type of position you are looking for as a part of your bio.

This is an opportunity to market yourself beyond your current techniques and is a way to show that you know how to take job search beyond the traditional methods!
Services Spotlight

This past week I had the pleasure of presenting to the Executive Directors of Immigrant Services Agencies from all over BC.  They were together for a professional development event hosted by AMSSA (www.AMSSA.org).  I presented on the topic of Staff Development and Motivation and focused the concepts towards retention strategies in times of change.

What resonated for me in the discussions was that Executive Directors and Program Managers are working so hard right now that many of the typical retention strategies that have been in place in an organization are falling  by the wayside.  They are not longer doing things like offering flexible schedules, providing ongoing feedback or consulting for input as much as they should.  All things that contribute to a high morale and an engaged workforce!
Instead, we are heads down, focused on getting the job done and not paying attention to the messages that are going on around us. And then we wonder why people are unhappy or why people aren't stepping up to go the extra mile at this time of intense workload demands

I will be blogging about these various retention strategies over the next few weeks so stayed tuned!  And if you want more on this, give me a call and I can share my presentation with you or I can come in and discuss with your staff/managers.
