Ryta Sondergard, Philanthropist and Community Volunteer

Please join us as we celebrate Ryta Sondergard, one of the three 2011 Triumphant Women being honored at Excelsior's PASSPORT PARTY March 19, 2011.  Ryta joins Colorado Rep. Cindy Acree and former Excelsior student, Rebecca Bell as our 2011 Triumphant Women.   

There's no doubt Ryta knows how to care for her community. She has given her time and talent to multiple organizations, including the Kempe Foundation, Colorado Ballet, The Denver Dumb Friends League, Ronald McDonald House, Colorado Uplift, The Gathering Place and many other non-profits. Her work hasn't gone unnoticed; she's been honored as the Georgia Imhoff Philanthropist and Volunteer Extraordinaire of the Year, the Ginger Merelli Special Event Volunteer of the Year and the Denver Health Foundation Special Friend to Newborns in Need.   keep reading.

Short Term Program Responds to the Needs of the Community

In late 2008 Excelsior created the Short Term Intensive Residential Treatment Program as an alternative to hospitalization.

  The intent was to provide a highly structured and safe environment for kids to stay that provided intensive mental health and psychiatric services and was short term (typically 3-5 days).   Initially pitching the idea to a couple local mental health centers, we began to see random referrals as this program started up.   By 2010 the community's use of Excelsior's Short Term Intensive Residential Treatment Program had increased ten-fold (1225%) in comparison to 2009.

Alexa's Next Accomplishment:  College!

Congratulations to Alexa who graduated from Excelsior High School in December and is off to college in California!  Alexa's goal is to become a Fire Fighter and "protect others and, someday, save someone's life".  With her determination and energy, we know Alexa will accomplish her goals!

Matt Louzon Supports Children and Families through Community Based Treatment

In the last year, concurrent with his work as a therapist, supervisor, consultant and trainer, Matt has been providing treatment services to children and families through the Short Term Intensive Residential Treatment Program at Excelsior.  Most notably in this program, Matt has created treatment plans that support children and parents and worked to keep families together in their homes.  Many of Matt's clients have been able to use more effective coping skills, have improved relationships with their families, have built supports in the community and have avoided hospitalization and long-term residential treatment.
