Improving TB Diagnosis
Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death among HIV-infected patients worldwide. Detecting this killer disease has been very difficult in resource-limited settings.
A new rapid diagnostic technology has been approved by the World Health Organization. And thanks to the generosity of AMHF supporters this technology is now available at the Partners in Hope Medical Center in Malawi.
This device, called the Gene Xpert, improves case detection, speeds treatment, and will help prevent further spread of the TB bacteria.
Future applications may include detection of other infections and measurement of the HIV viral load in blood.

Junior Doctors Graduate in Tanzania
The first program supported by AMHF, the Assistant Medical Officer Training Program at the Arusha Lutheran Medical Center in Tanzania has just graduated its first class. These physicians assistants spent two years upgrading their skills in medicine, pediatrics, surgery and obstetrics.
Now 15 of the 208 hospitals in Tanzania will have a "doctor." These graduates, such as top student Wallace Sahani (pictured below), will return to mostly rural institutions to serve those desperately in need of quality medical care.
AMHF is privileged to continue partnering with this institution, and we are looking for long-term support for this vital educational program.

Tanzania Pediatric Rehabiliation Center
Goal Met and Exceeded!
Dear Friends,
In May, we announced a matching challenge grant involving AMHF and Legatum Foundation, which is generously providing $50,000 toward this special project. An AMHF donor is providing another $60,000, bringing the total matching challenge grant to $110,000.
I am pleased to announce that we have met and exceeded this $110,000 target! Construction is scheduled to begin later this year.
Thank you to all those who have participated in this effort to improve care for vulnerable children in Tanzania!
Serving with you,

Jon Fielder, MD

Life-Saving Medical Supplies Arrive in Malawi and Sudan
Financial and political uncertainty has contributed to a severe shortage of essential medications in Malawi. A shipping container full of much-needed medical supplies from the Netherlands arrived at Partners in Hope earlier this month. These critical items will allow the clinic to continue to provide high-quality free HIV care to over 5,000 clients.
AMHF, with gifts from our valued partners, purchased and shipped this container. AMHF also bought medications for Ekwendeni Presbyterian Hospital in northern Malawi, and malaria medicines for Katawa Clnic near Lake Malawi.
