Fluorosis

Fluorosis

In the United States, we think of fluoride as a good thing, helping to protect our teeth from decay.

But too much naturally-occurring fluoride in the water can be damaging to growing bones, causing debilitating curvatures.

This problem is sadly all too common in northern Tanzania and other parts of Africa.

Fortunately, many of these children receive life-changing surgical correction at the Selian Orthopedic Institute.  Following surgery, casting and follow-up care are critical to a successful and lasting cure.

What is

Razoo?

Razoo is a web service for non-profit organizations to showcase their work and collect online donations in an efficient manner.

Online credit card gifts through Razoo are tax-deductible and will be passed on to AMHF in full.  A tax-deductible receipt will be issued (electronically when you provide an email address).  The report of the donations is passed immediately to AMHF.

In addition to supporting the pediatric rehabilitation project in Tanzania (see information to right), general donations to AMHF may be made through Razoo by clicking here.

$110,000 Matching Challenge Grant!

Dear Friends,

I am excited to announce a wonderful opportunity to assist the needy children of northern Tanzania!

Legatum Foundation is generously providing $50,000 toward this special project.  An AMHF donor is providing another $60,000, bringing the total matching challenge grant to $110,000.

If we are able to meet this match, then we would raise $220,000 and Dr. Mark Jacobson, long-time medical missionary in Tanzania, will have the necessary funding to complete a pediatric rehabilitation center in Arusha.

Please read more about this project below, and consider passing on this newsletter to others who might be interested.

Serving with you,

Proposed Pediatric Rehabilitation Center, Selian Orthopedic Institute

The innovative and growing program at Selian Orthopedic Institute uses community outreach to identify impoverished children requiring rehabilitative and orthopedic surgery.  Spina bifida repair is also being offered to a small number of clients.

In 2011, 350 kids will receive life-changing surgical correction because of the support of AMHF, up from 270 the year before.

What is now necessary is a larger residential and rehabilitation facility to house and care for children before and after their complicated surgeries.  This rehabilitation center, or "Plaster House," is the focus of our matching challenge grant.

Children recuperating in the current "Plaster House"

These children remain at-risk following surgery and require long periods of recuperation and monitoring. Physical therapy and wound care are vital. Some children must remain under supervision for weeks or even months following their operations. Returning too soon to rural Tanzania, where medical facilities are limited, risks losing the gains of surgery.

At present, children stay at over-crowded leased premises. Says Arusha Lutheran Medical Center director Dr. Mark Jacobson, "We currently have 80 kids sometimes in our existing 18-bed rented space!"

Dr. Jacobson has spent two decades in Tanzania and recently oversaw the successful construction and opening of a new referral medical complex. Over a decade, more than 4,000 kids could benefit from safe, hygienic and compassionate therapy offered at the Plaster House.

The total project cost for the "Plaster House" is $400,000, of which $175,000 has already been raised. Please consider helping us to close the gap and build this critical facility by participating in the $110,000 matching challenge.
