HIV & TB Training

Started in 2004 by AMHF CEO Dr. Jon Fielder, the successful HIV clinical training program at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya faced closure because of budget cuts.  Having trained over 700 clinicians in concert with Nazareth Hospital, this widely acclaimed mentorship program was too valuable to end.

AMHF stepped in to both continue the HIV training component and to add a new TB preceptorship in concert with the Kenyan National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Program.  The TB training curriculum is based in part on Dr. Fielder's book Tuberculosis in the Era of HIV.  The goal is to improve the recognition of HIV-related tuberculosis in settings with limited access to diagnostic equipment.  We believe this initiative can literally save thousands of lives through improved and faster detection.

In the first year, 180 participants will receive 1-2 weeks of close supervision from Kenyan and missionary doctors.  The unique training model includes  lectures, seeing patients in the clinic and on the wards, and discussing cases and journal articles.

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to announce two exciting developments for the African Mission Healthcare Foundation!

First, we are now an IRS-recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  (To see our IRS letter, click here.)  We are grateful for the pro bono legal services provided by Weil Gotschal & Manges.

This certification means that AMHF may itself receive tax-deductible donations.  For updated giving information, please see the last section below.

Second, we are thrilled to announce a new initiative funded by a very generous friend of Africa.  For the next three years, AMHF will assist our on-the-ground partners Dr. Rob Congdon and SIM in developing a medical center in South Sudan.  More information regarding this life-saving project is available below.

Thank you all for partnering with us.

Grace,

Doro Primary Health Center, South Sudan

Following years of turmoil and conflict, relative peace and stability have, at least temporarily, returned to South Sudan.

Rob with childMissionary physician Dr. Rob Congdon, with two decades of experience in Africa, has been slowly re-building a former mission health center in a remote area of the country.  Along with a dedicated team of missionary and Kenyan nurses and newly trained Sudanese health workers, primary health care and nutritional rehabilitation services have been offered to thousands of Sudanese since 2008.  A new maternity is nearing completion.

Doro overheadThanks to an extremely generous gift, development of this center, the only quality health care for hundreds of miles, will continue.  Planned activities include completion of the maternity, renovation of the outpatient clinic, construction of hospital wards for adults and children, a new Nutrition Village, a TB and leprosy treatment center, and housing and administrative blocks.  In addition, resources are available to provide medicines and to support the daily operations of the center, which will care for 75,000 outpatients and inpatients over the next three years.

We will certainly keep you updated regarding the progress of this exciting new initiative!
