The African Mission Healthcare Foundation exists to support the effective and compassionate medical efforts of mission and church organizations across the continent.  The Foundation seeks to link the generosity of individuals, philanthropy and churches to increase the reach and impact of effective on-the-ground healthcare workers.

Training African Surgeons

Mwenywemali

Tony Mwenyemali is one of three promising young African surgeons-in-training sponsored by AMHF.  Dr. Mwenyemali, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, trains at Mbingo Baptist Hospital in Cameroon under the auspices of the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons.

PAACS trainees learn under qualified Western surgeons.  After five years of quality education they return to their home areas to offer surgical care to the underserved.  Each of these future surgeons can be expected to operate on 15,000 patients during their careers and consult on another 100,000 in the clinic.

With an average of only 1 surgeon for every 250,000 people in Africa, 10-20% of all preventable deaths on the continent are attrributable to surgical conditions.  Educating the next generation of African surgeons is literally a life-and-death matter for tens of thousands.

Dear Friends,

The African Mission Healthcare Foundation is off to a great start!  We have already approved 13 projects in 6 countries for support, with more great work identified.  Please read on to learn about these life-saving efforts.

Thank you for your partnership as we support health and healing in Africa.  Our goal remains nothing less than assisting millions who are currently suffering without access to quality services.

Grace,

Naivasha Medical Center Maternity, Kenya

In 2006, this 3-acre piece of land a little over a kilometer from beautiful lake Naivasha was empty save a dilapidated building.  Now there is a busy AIDS and general clinic, antenatal services, HIV clinical training, and, as of last month, a brand new maternity and nursery!

The first baby was born there in late December (see picture).  Because of the growing and young population, we expect many, many more!NMC first baby Dec 2010

Most of the maternity construction has been funded by the Fielder Medical Assistance Foundation (precursor to AMHF).  Now AMHF is committing $41,000 this year to subsidize care for the poor.  The main Kijabe Hospital which oversees Naivasha has a maternal mortality rate one-fifth that of Kenya as a whole.  We hope to bring that level of excellence and compassion to the women and children of Naivasha.

AMHF also purchased an ambulance for the rapidly expanding medical center.  Now emergency cases may be transferred quickly and the successful HIV community program may expand its reach.  A generator will follow, to provide back-up power.

The hospital is stepping up its own commitment, assigning a Kenyan doctor to join a part-time expatriate physician on-site.  Along with the dedicated support staff, they will handle the 40,000 outpatients as well as the more complicated obstetrical cases.

Remarkable growth in under four years!  We are incredibly grateful to to all who have helped make this possible.
