The African Mission Healthcare Foundation exists to support the effective and compassionate medical efforts of mission and church organizations across the continent.  The Foundation seeks to link the generosity of American citizens, philanthropy and churches to increase the reach and impact of effective on-the-ground healthcare workers.

Our Core Values

Partnership

AMHF seeks to support effective implementing hospitals, clinics and organizations by providing additional resources so they can more fully serve their communities.

Implementation and Sustainability

We seek to implement at the ground level, to provide care, to see patients on the wards, to educate the surgeon in the operating room and the nurse in the clinic.

Transparency, Accountability, and Efficiency

AMHF officers include past and current missionaries and health professionals with extensive contacts within and knowledge of the mission healthcare community.  In concert with the advisory board and our partner organizations, only the institutions with proven records of success and accountability will be selected for sponsorship.

Committed to the poor

Foundation efforts will be focused upon those institutions serving the poor.

December 2010

Dear Friends,

Since 2002 I have had the pleasure of meeting or working with a diverse group of committed and talented individuals, both Western and African, who have sacrificed comfort and careers to improve health care on the continent.  In 2005 I first conceived of the need for a central funding mechanism to assist these many worthwhile endeavors.  Mark Gerson and Sean Fieler, longtime friends and generous supporters, shared this vision, which has now become a reality.

I would like to announce the formation of the African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), a legally incorporated charity.  Consistent with its Mission Statement, AMHF will identify, evaluate, support, and monitor high-impact church and mission-affiliated healthcare services across the continent.

Now please allow me to share with you the first of many wonderful projects we will be supporting.

Assistant Medical Officer Training, Tanzania

Tanzania has only one doctor for every 100,000 people.  Hospitals in rural areas often do not possess a doctor at all.  The bulk of care provision falls to clinical officers (like American physician assistants), who are often not adequately trained to handle C-sections, minor surgery, and orthopedic injuries.

The Arusha Lutheran Medical Center is a respected institution located in northern Tanzania.  ALMC has been recognized by the Ministry of Health as an assistant medical officer (AMO) training school.  Clinical officers are provided with two years of additional education to upgrade their skillALMC front web set before returning to rural areas.  These AMOs are essentially "junior doctors," able to manage more complicated medical and surgical cases than a traditional physician assistant.

AMHF is providing $50,000 annually to train 17 AMOs in the two-year curriculum.  These funds supplement the tuition payments made by the students, which are not enough to meet the cost of a comprehensive and high-quality training curriculum.

Each of these junior doctors will provide augmented care to tens of thousands over their lifetimes, including undertaking hundreds of C-sections and minor procedures.

Dr. Mark Jacobson, director of ALMC, has been in Tanzania for over two decades.  He oversaw the successful construction of the new Arusha Lutheran Medical Center.

AMHF intends to provide ongoing support for this unique and exciting educational model.
