Family Mass and Brunch
Family Mass and Brunch  Sunday, September 30, 2012

On a beautiful, sunny morning our parents, students, alumnae from the class of 1972 and faculty and staff enjoyed a spirit-filled Mass followed by a delicious brunch.  Father Steve Davoren celebrated Mass and reminded all of us  that 'anything is possible if we believe.' We are grateful to our Campus Ministry adults and students for organizing such a lovely Mass, to our Liturgical Choir for their heavenly sound, to our faculty and staff for singing and ringing their chimes, to our Parents' Guild for the wonderful set up for a delicious brunch and to our Queen's Council for their gracious hospitality. We are also grateful for all who braved the freeway closure --as Father Davoren said, "obstacles may be put in our way,
but that should not stop us."

Junior Larissa Peltola recently met Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Two weeks ago Larissa was invited by Amnesty International to attend a private reception honoring Aung San Suu Kyi. The Nobel Peace Laureate gave a speech about how youth can make a difference in the world, especially within education. Larissa was ecstatic about meeting her life long role model and for the first time was speechless.

VOLLEYBALL

The rotation of Meaghan Truman, Kristen Castellanos, Lindsey Smith, Catherine Feathers, Jenny Jones, Alexis Jackson, Malia Smith, Julia Madsen and Gaby deGuzman has proved to be a force as they beat both Marlborough and Immaculate Heart this week to sit atop the standings in the Sunshine League with rival Marymount. Coach Megan Jacobson has installed a collegiate system that utilizes many players. The Varsity team headed into the Royal Tournament this past weekend with an overall record of 8 - 3.  For the second time in three years, there was a Regal coronation at the annual Royal Classic. Congratulations to our players who outlasted the competition, rallying to defeat Redlands East Valley 25-22  in the gold divisioin final.

The JV and Frosh/Soph volleyball teams who continue to play strong despite tough losses to Marlborough, rebounded with impressive victories over Immaculate Heart. The JV team advanced to the final four of the prestigious Redondo Tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY

Led by sophomore Madison Evans, the cross country team has made tremendous strides since the beginning of the school year. A heavy dose of weekend invitationals and several medalists have proved to be a part of the team's early season success. Despite a tough league loss to Marlborough, the Varsity team came back two days later on Saturday, September 22 to beat them in the Bell-Jeff invitational taking 6th place overall. Sophomore Anne Fitz and freshmen phenoms Ella Bess and Allie Handal have given the Regal Gryphons a strong core of runners. Both Varsity and JV dominated Ramona Convent at Kenneth Hahn on September 27 with resounding victories and six runners obtaining personal bests.

TENNIS

In the first ever tennis match in NDA history, the tennis team beat Ramona Convent 15 - 3 to begin the season on a strong note. Despite a valiant effort, the team faced perennial power, Marlborough and dropped the first league contest. The team coached by chemistry teacher David Christman and Mrs. Kim Combs have shown steady improvement.
