Season Wrap Up-
Basketball The Regal Gryphon Varsity basketball team finished as co-champions of the Sunshine League, marking the first time since 1996 that NDA has finished on top. The team opened with #6 ranked Bishop Montgomery in the first round of the CIF-SS play-offs. Bishop was a very formidable opponent. The first quarter found the Regal Gryphons in a hole, down 20 - 4. Bishop Montgomery's Lady Knights' full court press and height gave NDA problems. The Regal Gryphons settled down after than but still fell short, 61 - 43. The Junior Varsity team, led by Sophia Costanzo, Cam McDermott, Nia Sanchez and Delaney Smith, competed against Marymount in the last game of the season. While the lead shifted back and forth for three quarters, the Regal Gryphons pulled away in the fourth quarter and reign as undisputed league champions of the Sunshine League. Soccer The Regal Gryphon Varsity soccer team pulled off the improbable. While winless in league with two weeks to go, the team posted consecutive victories over Immaculate Heart, Marlborough and Marymount (at Marymount) to cap a monumental comeback to take 2nd place in league. travel to Santa Ana to play Godinez High School. The team came out flat after a long bus ride to Santa Ana to play Godinez High School and found themselves down 1 - 0 after five minutes. Erin Jones was bumped after a corner kick by a Godinez player, and the ball fell in front of the goal. A frantic effort to clear the ball ended up with a clear shot on goal. The team came out aggressively in the second half as NDA dominated play with several shots on goal. It was not until 2 minutes left in the game that Tessa Allen scored a goal off a corner kick to tie the school. Godinez took the ensuing kick-off and took a long shot from the right side that ended up in the upper left hand corner of the goal with less than a minute to play, ending the Regal Gryphons comeback season. Similarly, the JV soccer team picked up steam as the season progressed losing only to Marymount and finishing second in the league. |
