NDA Art Students Explore Italy

NDA teachers, Ms. Beauvy and Ms. Faris, took 12 students to Italy over Christmas break. They started in Pompeii and Naples, then went to Rome. They visited the Vatican and saw fireworks on New Years Eve with the Coliseum as a backdrop. Afterwards they went to Assisi and Sienna, two lovely towns. They spent two days in Florence and took a bike tour of Pisa.

Soccer

The Varsity soccer team resembled more of a M.A.S.H. unit with five major injuries to starting players as the season opened in early December. After an opening season win, the team struggled through injuries against tough opponents like Harvard Westlake, Redondo Union, West Torrance, Chatsworth (the defending City champion) and Mira Costa. The team competed mightily in the North Orange County Championships after Christmas and finished impressively with 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie over some of the top ranked teams in Southern Section. The Varsity opened league play on Saturday with a 0 - 0 tie against a very strong Marlborough team. The girls can be seen playing Ramona Convent and Marymount this week, two of the top teams in the Sunshine League. The Junior Varsity team has been the "farm" team for the Varsity, supplying much needed support for a depleted line-up. The team played tough in their preseason games and fought hard in the Don Lugo JV Tournament prior to Christmas against much larger schools from the Orange and Inland counties. |

Basketball
The Notre Dame Academy Basketball teams began play late November and continued with tournament play in the month of December. The Varsity team sports an overall record of 9 wins and 5 losses and is currently in first place in the Sunshine League. The team had preseason wins over Grace Brethren and Beverly Hills while taking a tough loss to Culver City prior to final exams. After Christmas the team competed in the Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament taking 3rd place while beating #8 ranked Valley Christian along the way. Fran Caruncho and Mary Kate Reid were named to the All-Tournament team. Next up after Christmas was the prestigious West Coast Classic featuring some of the top 64 teams in CIF. Our team swept into the semi-finals before losing to defending CIF champion Bonita and losing a tough game to Notre Dame Sherman Oaks to finish in 4th place. Fran Caruncho was named to the All-Tournament Team. | NDA Half Court Shot - Fran Caruncho Courtesy of Mr. Caruncho

The team began league play this past Saturday night and defeated defending league Champion Marlborough by a score of 51 - 45. The JV Basketball team despite tough losses to Beverly Hills and Culver City bounced back at the Downey Tournament after Christmas taking 3rd place. After Christmas the team traveled to Fairfax to take on the best of the city schools. Back-to-back routs over Westchester and View Park led to an exciting semi-final game against an older and very strong Palisades team. Despite two disqualifications due to fouls, the team lost in overtime in the final seconds by three points. The next night the JV's handily defeated Carson for the 3rd place championship ... their second in two weeks. Similar to the Varsity team, the JV team opened league play against defending league champion Marlborough and fought to a tough 39 -35 victory ... NDA's first over Marlborough since 2007. |
