Realizing Subrogation Potential: Defining Successful Carriers in the Years to Come
In these difficult economic times, many insurance companies, TPAs, and self-insureds are struggling to manage their expenses and improve their bottom line. In dealing with thousands of clients across the country, I am often amazed at how many companies leave a substantial amount of money on the table by not fully realizing subrogation potential. The financial windfall of conducting thorough subrogation investigations performed by expert subrogation adjusters is compelling to say the least.
I see this firsthand when assisting our clients with their subrogation needs. Companies that paid little to no attention to subrogation are now reaping the benefits of this added revenue and, in turn, substantially increasing their profitability. The carriers that are out in front in this area are gaining an instant competitive advantage in the marketplace.
There is potential for subrogation on any claim that involves a third party, including worker's compensation, auto liability, and general liability. Although most claims professionals understand the importance of subrogation, due to the many facets to be handled on a claim, the subrogation claim is often pushed aside to be handled at a later date - or worse yet is not recognized or pursued at all. Investigating, pursuing, evaluating and negotiating a subrogation claim is often complex, time-consuming and intimidating. By outsourcing subrogation at the onset of the claim, you are able to partner with someone who has the skills, expertise and a clear grasp of the steps needed to ensure successful recoveries.
Outsourcing subrogation services makes perfect sense, as it allows claims handlers to focus on their core duties of managing a heavy case load while outsourced subrogation adjusters can focus strictly on effective and accurate investigations that will produce outcomes that will drive overall subrogation recognition. For example, Ethos' subrogation team experienced a total recovery percentage of 55% over the last three years. Prior to that time period, our clients' normal recovery rate was between 10% - 20%. The financial impact of outsourcing subrogation services speaks for itself.
Capitalizing on subrogation as an area of opportunity and outsourcing expertise in the industry is what will define most successful carriers in the coming years.
As we embrace the excitement and challenges of a new year, we would like to thank you, our valued clients, for your business. We appreciate you very much. For those of you that have never utilized our services, I invite you to give us a few trial cases and experience The Ethos Difference for yourself.
Best Regards,
Ed Cotilla

How Are Your Claimants Weathering the Cold?
Winter is at its peak and as another massive storm bullies its way through the Midwest to the Northeast, weary residents are hunkering down yet again. After the snow stops falling, more than a few unfortunate souls will be digging snow out of their driveways and sidewalks.
So far this winter, Ethos has obtained excellent footage of claimants shoveling snow, lugging heavy bags of salt and sand, and even pushing stuck cars. The cold season presents an excellent opportunity to find out how active your claimants truly are.
Take advantage of this opportunity with our Three-Day Surveillance Special. Order a surveillance investigation of three or more days and save $150 off our standard rate! Call us today at 1-866-783-0525 or click here to assign online.

Best Catch: Ethos' Mortgage Fraud Unit Sniffs Out Another Bad Loan
Mortgage fraud has been on the rise for the past several years and the trend looks likely continue. This crime hurts not only homeowners and businesses, but the national economy as a whole. Stopping fraudulent loan activity has become a major focus of law enforcement and the mortgage industry itself.
A specialized team of investigators at Ethos Risk Services is doing its part to stop mortgage fraudsters in their tracks. Employing a variety of investigative techniques, the Ethos team recently exposed a bogus loan and found that the loan officer had falsified documents to complete the transaction.
After running into several dead-ends while attempting to locate the borrower on a residence that had gone into default status, we uncovered a lead that the borrower was possibly incarcerated. A search with the Department of Corrections confirmed that the borrower, indeed, was in jail, serving a 15-year sentence. In fact, he had been incarcerated on the very day of the loan closing.
Doing some more digging, our investigators found that employer listed by the borrower on his loan papers was actually the loan officer that had initiated the application! The case was turned over to the authorities, who are aggressively pursuing charges against the shady loan officer.
Recent regulatory changes in the mortgage industry will hopefully prevent even more fraudulent loans from being initiated. Ethos will continue to investigate questionable loans to ensure that those who perpetrate mortgage fraud are held responsible. |
The Ethos 8: Q & A With Operations Manager Nathan Swain
In each edition of The Examiner, we like to feature one of our Ethos team members in a Q &A session we call The Ethos Eight. This time around, we direct the spotlight at our Operations Manager, Nathan Swain. Nate is new to Ethos but has plenty of industry experience and has quickly made a positive impact on our operations.
Ethos Risk Services: Where did you grow up?
Nathan Swain: I'm a "Florida Cracker". Grew up in Tallahassee, Florida.
ERS: What's your favorite childhood memory?
NS: My favorite childhood memory would be going to Florida State University games with my dad. We'd try and go to at least two or three games each year. Of course, by the time I reached 18, I was ready to get out town and elected to go to The University of South Florida.
ERS: How did you get into the risk mitigation industry?
NS: I was in college and didn't have a clue or any direction. I took a criminal justice course and thought it caught my interest, so I ended up majoring in criminology. After school, I met a claims investigator and became convinced that the risk mitigation industry would be a great fit for me.
ERS: What is your most memorable moment professionally?
NS: That would have to be when I moved to Fort Lauderdale/Miami and began my career as an investigator. I had learned so much in the classroom, but learned even more from getting out into the field.
ERS: What do you like most about working for Ethos?
NS: Ethos is a great and fun place to work. The best part is working for the President and Vice-President, Ed Cotilla and Todd Petrie. They have a passion for this business and really get the very best out of their employees.
ERS: If you had to choose another line of work besides this, what would you do?
NS: I'd play pro football or be a rock star. Either one of those would work.
ERS: If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and why?
NS: Ability to Fly. Do I really need to explain?
ERS: We understand you're a big college football fan. What is your favorite team?
NS: My favorite team is my alma mater, the University of South Florida Bulls.
