Hingham
Hingham Council on Aging
Senior Center Scores an A+
with Lifelong Learning
Program

The Hingham Department of Elder Services provides programs, services, activities, and transportation for all Hingham residents 60 years of age and older and is a valuable resource for information to those caring for an older person.  Their monthly newsletter, Central Times, provides a wealth of information about programs and services and the calendar of events.  You can request one at their website.

One of the newer and innovative initiatives undertaken by Elder Services last summer was the design and development of Discovery - a Lifelong Learning Program.  The program provides a curriculum which appeals to varied interests and backgrounds.

A Steering Committee, comprised of senior volunteers ranging in age from their 60s to late 80s, selected the curriculum.  Four 6-week courses are offered during the fall as well as a "brown bag" lecture and field trip.  The courses include:  Lighthouses, Essential Classics (symphonies, ensembles and the classical Hit Parade); Soviet Espionage and McCarthyism; and The Judicial Powers of the Supreme Court in America.  The "brown bag" lecture begins at 1 pm and attendees are invited to bring lunch.  This fall's program is Popular Music of the 20s and 30s.  Rounding out the fall program is a lecture entitled Night Skies and a field trip to the Bridgewater Observatory.

Barbara Farnsworth, Director of the Senior Center, explains, "Each course is open to residents of Hingham, aged 60 and up.  If space permits non-residents and those under age 60 are welcomed."  Anyone interested can stop by the Senior Center to pick up a brochure or call 781-741-1458 to request one.  In-person registration begins on Monday 9/10 at 1:30 pm.

Barbara added, "Our Discovery - A Lifelong Learning Program is one that has broad appeal and seniors can enroll in as many courses they wish at only $25 per course.  They all sound really interesting!"

Another resource is the Wisdom Works Program, a job search training program for older adults which is part of a statewide initiative spearheaded by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.  Under the leadership of local volunteers, Wisdom Works provides hands-on-training experience on how to find employment in today's challenging job market.

Municipal funds, grants, donations and volunteer services support the Department of Elder Services, which allows residents to participate in programs at nominal cost or free of charge. The Senior Center is located at 224 Central Street and seniors are encouraged to visit.

Barbara Farnsworth says "The mission of the Department of Senior Services is to support the independence of Hingham's senior citizens, advocate for their needs and enhance the quality of their lives.  We coordinate programs and services in an atmosphere of respect that encourages self-reliance, good health and community involvement."

SHINE Counseling Services
Mararet Mellon
Margaret Mellon is the Director of Elder services and SHINE Counselor at  Wellspring.  She has been with the SHINE Program for eleven years.  After moving from London, England, and raising her three daughters, she joined the staff of SHINE.  Now she works part-time so that she can spend some quality time with her seven grandchildren ... all of whom live in Massachusetts.

SHINE - Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders - is where seniors, 62 years of age or older, can get free, unbiased health insurance counseling.   Margaret attends monthly meetings and is re-certified every year so she can keep up with Medicare A, B, and D... and Medicaid changes.  "There have been many changes through the years.  Re-certification ensures that I can help those who need information about health care," she said.  "It is important to explain in layman's terms, what is available and the various companies that can supply it ... do you know that 10,000 people per day turn 65 in this country?"

"The important thing that folks need to know, is that Medicare A pays 80% of hospital bills and Medicare B pays 80% of the doctor's bill, but unless you purchase Medigap Insurance, you will have to pay the remaining 20% of both out-of-pocket," she said.  "The SHINE Program can fill you in on the information you need to know about the various companies that sell this insurance.  But... we won't tell them which to buy; that decision is theirs.

TV advertising can be very confusing - people see it and think that they can only get Medigap Insurance from one company... but there are many options, based on several criteria.   We help our clients understand the options."

Call the SHINE Program at Wellspring to set up a free appointment - 781-925-3211.  Margaret says, "The most important thing is to be sure that your health care is in order.  It helps you keep your dignity to the end of your days."

FAQ  Frequently Asked Questions
"What should a person do if a loved one
dies while away from home?"

We are living in a society that is "on the move."
Business trips, vacations to places out of state or out of the country, job transfers, and retirement to locations "away from home" are commonplace.  This is why it is especially important to know what to do in case of an emergency.

When traveling, it is helpful for all of us to remember to carry a wallet-size card indicating the name and phone number of the next of kin along with the name and phone number of your the funeral home of your choice.

When a death occurs away from home, the first important step is to call your local funeral home.  This should be done regardless of where or when the death takes place.  Your funeral director will know exactly what to do and can offer valuable counsel in assisting your family to meet the immediate needs of the emergency.  He or she can also help eliminate any unnecessary expense.

At Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, we are very familiar with this unfortunate situation and are trained to deal with it professionally, with compassion and timeliness.  The process includes the following steps:

  1.  We will arrange to have the deceased transported to a funeral home near where the death has occurred.
  2.  We will also arrange for embalming, necessary permits to transport, airfare or other transportation home, and payment for services performed by the out of town funeral home.
  3.  We also arrange for the deceased to be transported to the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home so that the family's wishes can be carried out.

"All you need to do is contact us," added Dennis Keohane, "and we will help you take care of the rest."
